Changing a flight date through a booking agency by going through the airline hack?

So I have to change my flight dates that I booked through an online travel agency. The flight isn't for another month.

The travel agency charges a lot of money for this and they also charge the airlines cost of changing a ticket + the price difference.

Is there a way I can by pass the travel agency, by getting my official flight information and requesting the airline to change it directly (this particular airline charges very little)?

I am worried that they will quote me a lot for the change on their part + they wont give me the best price on the airlines part.

    In general NO

The travel agency owns the ticket and in most cases only they can make any changes

You should have been provided with a booking reference code, PNR which is 6 characters in length, depending on the type of ticket this MAY work but for most it will not and the airline will refer to the travel agency (and in fact if the travel agency makes any changes later these may overwrite yours)

So I have a reservation number to check in on the airlines website? If I check in there will i then be in total control of the tickets and be able to contact the airline?
