The usual health warning should apply, its a remote New York airport, bags and meals not included. Preclearance still not included but is wip.

My advice is make sure you do your homework and are comparing like with like. This is a great deal for some people but for others it will end up costing more than legacy carriers once everything is factored in.

Is preclearance definitely not included? Why?

    1st March - 5th March 2018 €192.30.

Express Bus Service available from when Norwegian Airlines flights start arriving $40 return not bad.

Pre-clearance is not a cert but the airports at the other end handle little international traffic and its not a large plane so its unlikely to be a major issue. You aren't connecting anywhere either which is the main advantage of CBP

The food onboard is limited (they offer pre-orders on 787 longhaul, doesn't seem they will on the 737s like this) and the food you can bring through CBP (if they do it) is even more limited. All drinks cost money, not even sure if you can get water free.

Free IFE will be a few tiny dropdown screens with the audio available on wifi, and not nessacerily even closely in sync. They have more stuff available for money though. No chargers so either bringing your own content or watching theirs may be difficult for the full flight

I wouldn't do this unless the price difference is huge or I was broke basically.

well, my sister in law lives 30 miles from Stewart airport where they fly in to, so for 99 euro each way to Dublin in July/August, this is definitely something she will be considering... even if she has to bring a packed lunch. Posh she is not!!!

If the preclearance is operating (which article linked above indicates) then she needs to be careful not to have prohibited food items

Would I pay €400 return for this, no. For €200, absolutely 😊

You just have to have the right mindset about this. Think of it more like Ryanair, then traditional full service airline

Bring only a carry on bag, bring a packed lunch and water with you and bring an iPad or similar with a few movies on it and you won't notice the time fly buy and will save yourself a few hundred euros.

I'd rather spend the extra €250 on a nice restaurant in Manhattan then crappy airline food!

Thanks again OP, I'm booked for Providence in September :)

I've flown with British Airways before and ended up lumped on an American Airlines 737, no in flight entertainment, wasn't accommodated to sit beside who I was travelling with and was given a meal that I would have sent back at McDonalds. I'll be delighted going onto this flight expecting nothing knowing that I saved a fortune because of it!

Another thing worth noting, their US flights have free cancellation within the first 24 hours of booking, so no harm in going for it now and thinking about it later. Beware though that cancellations have to be made with their phone department, I'm sure that might be slightly painful (maybe not though)

    Great prices alright.

Was only in New York in April, so looking at Boston.

Would you guys recommend it for a few days traveling? Solo traveler here.

How easy is it to get from PVD to downtown Boston? Had a look online but couldnt find much, which I'm guessing means it's probably not that easy without renting a car?

There is a bus from TG Green airport to Boston South:

Peter Pan busses run 5 services a day from the airport by the look of it. Roughly $32 each way

There's a choochoo, $12 from the airport to Boston

These fares dont include any luggage at all, so there is no cabin bag in the price and it is 44 each way top add a cabin bag and 55 each way to add a checked bag.

With a cabin bag it will cost 288 return which is still very decent.

A 20kg checked bag costs €35 each way

Cheese sandwiches are about all you'll get through preclearance on the way back if they're in a particularly officious mood.

Wow are the airline with a charge for cabin bags, Norwegian don't seem that bloody minded yet!

If anything, Norwegian seem to be spurring Aer Lingus into having more transatlantic sales, which may be of use too

I have seen Dublin to JFK for only €397 with Aer Lingus. Even if you don't fly Norwegian, they are driving down Aer Lingus prices

Booked Dublin-Providence return for €200 in August. Says flight leaves from T1 so no CBP pre-clearance it would seem. Costs 90 quid to add a bag, but still great price!

    Found something very positive!

If you book the middle fare you get a check in bag, meal (prob a mini one) and seat choice, but the best thing is you can choose emergency exit seats at no extra cost.

So you can get flights to their NYC airport for €330 which includes bag, emergency exit seats, pre clearance and a meal. They also mention wifi but that sounds too good to be true. Not too bad in fairness.

Wifi will probably fail somewhere across the Atlantic unless they've put the kit from the 787s on the 737s. Its uselessly slow anyway. Don't expect to watch anything on it, its barely possible to read text emails. That said the paid wifi on some airlines is just as bad!

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 23,631 Mod ✭✭✭✭bk

The type of Wifi Norwegian has is actually satellite based, so it would continue to work over the Atlantic, unlike the ground based one that US airlines use.

I've used it to Norway and it was great. Yes not fast enough for video, but fine for boards, Facebook, etc. So a good way to distract you for a few hours.

However I thought that Norwegian had already announced that the aircraft on these routes won't have the wifi hardware on the aircraft.

Btw one other think to be aware of, these are narrow body 737 aircraft like Ryanair use, rather then the more spacious widebody aircraft people might have been use to on transatlantic.

True, but you have as much of a chance getting a narrow body 757s on transatlantic as you have getting a wide body, especially in the offpeak months

Yes if you fly from Shannon. However if you fly from Dublin you'll only likely be on a 757 off peak to Hartford, Washington or Newark. During the summer the 757s fly from Dublin to Hartford and Washington.

Most of the us airlines use 757s off peak and some continue to do even at peak times

Apologies, I thought it was just Aer Lingus you were referring to.

    Great point!

The next time I go to the States, there'll probably be a few more of us, so if that helps drive the prices down, it's good for everyone!

€330 for Norwegian is not worth it. Especially when Aer Lingus is only €70 more most of the year.
