What device did you run the Speedtst on? I'm asking as, despite being on a 90/20 FTTC link, I can never get more that 22ish Mb/s downstream to show on my Galaxy Note 3, iPad etc.

    Thats an iPhone.

    At a guess you're using 2.4Ghz, try 5Ghz.

Would my router not need to have a working 5Ghz radio for that to work?

Yes it would. And it should have one by now. I'd guess you may be Vodafone on a crappy 658C?

I've just found that part of my problem resulted from my Router's WiFi having been set to operate as b/g only. I changed the setting to allow b/g/n and I can now get to 49+ Mb/s to the phone.

So I reckon that between us we've eked about as much as possible on the 2.4 band.

Not really, you can get 110Mb ish on 2.4GHz with a 300Mb .11N radio. But not with cheap ISP supplied gear.

50 is a good result generally, chances are your phone wouldnt seem any faster with more so it wouldnt bother me.

WOW! Is that eircom's new extreme FTTH service(GPON)? Looks like they offer better routing/interconnectivity than Vodafone siro. It wasn't like that couple of months ago, Siro (Vodafone) had them beat. They must have improved their infrastructure? Where are you located if you don't mind me asking...?

yeah Eir Fibre Extreme 300/50. The ping results certainly impressed me, I don't think they can go any lower really.

delighted with it, now if only they will increase that fup I'd be even happier.

located about 2km from Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath in a rural area.

Should of checked your Avi before i asked for your location, Thanks for that. The ping is really what got me, it's unbelievable.
does the ping fluctuate during peak hours or is it consistent throughout?
Sorry to be asking you of this but would you be able to do a speedtest to one of the servers in Frankfurt and Paris?
Was talking to one of the guys at eircom they said the area where i am in should go live in september, can't wait. Yeah, lol, higher upload sure would of been nicer, but latency is what really matters to me the most!

ping stays the same 24/7. Even when im playing a game and other stuff streaming, the dos pings are the same.

Now you're just teasing, LOL. In all seriousness though that is amazing, and very interesting at the same time. Maybe there is less congestion at night which that could explain the reason, unless you're getting that consistently now. You are also probably Very close to the exchange.. Have you tried testing the servers a bit farther away such as, Cork, Galway or Carlow to see if you get similar results at that exact time?

A lot more pedestrian than Gonzo's but a far cry from what we had before:

    6227933106.png

The test was done over Wi-Fi as well, going to get powerline adapters which might hopefully bring some improvement. Can't wait until FTTH becomes the standard though, I'd kill for its consistency.

The 1ms was probably due to how late at night it was. I generally get 2ms to all the Irish speedtest sites, except the Cork one which goes up to 7ms.

I am not a fan of the new speeedtest website, no way of searching other than guessing/typing in a destination so couldn't test anywhere in Northern Ireland. I miss the map and just clicking around the world testing speeds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 804 ✭✭✭editorsean

It looks like Ookla got rid of the map completely. Up until recently, it still gave me the option of the clickable map in Chrome, but that's gone now.

Surprisingly, the website recommends its Windows 10 app to run ping tests, yet it's more crippled than even the website! It lacks a search field and the furthest away location it shows is 455 miles away. I'm not sure how the map manages to be so bloated as it's 184.3MB going by the Store App size.

The best workaround I can think of off hand is to ping a HMA VPN server from DOS. As their desktop utility provides a ping test, it seems like all their servers respond to ping requests, at least any I've tried from the command prompt. You can get an extensive list here, which lists them by country and city, e.g. "UK, Scotland, Glasgow".

For example, if you want to ping a Northern Ireland IP address, ping their Belfast IP (194.88.142.5 or 194.88.142.6.) While they only have two servers in Ireland and two in the North, they have servers in various cities in many other European countries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,094 ✭✭✭✭ED E

The mobile Speedtest app keeps giving me servers with poor routes. Getting 50 instead of 180 etc. You can still change it in the app though.

Gonzo if you want to test latency use the linux ping tool, reports after the decimal point so your 1ms may only be .8. Not that it matters more than ePeen :D

Thats crazy, ive eir ftth and the best i can do is 4/5ms....interestingly i was at a conference a few weeks ago with the owner of the cork internet xchange and i asked him why considering i can practically see his server from my house i can still never get any better than 4/5ms and DL speeds of nowhere near dubiln etc. Anyway as you are all aware i am back hauled to Dublin.

But it was very interesting in that with this new fibre trans Atlantic cable his data centre is now the lowest latency data centre in europe to the US. As a result he is quadrupling his size to take advantage, hopefully in cork we might get better routing as a result.

On another note, man do these places use energy, his racks are running at 10kW...it was an energy conferences so it was interesting to see how he deals with the heat.

6.1kWp south facing, South of Cork City

maybe you have a long stretch of cable between your router and the pc? Maybe Eir Vision adds some extra ping times?

I have a very short run of cable between the ONT/Modem and the computer as everything is in the same room.3 feet of cable between the modem and the back of the computer. Perhaps that's what makes the difference in pings.

I had 30 Mbps Eir eFibre. A couple of days ago, just out of curiosity, ran a "line test" on eir's website and got 40 Mbps. Contacted Eir chat (at 9pm even) and got switched to 40Mbps with no hassle! Had to move Wi-Fi to 5Ghz to get the full speed on the computer. (I get the same speed with a patch cord to the modem/router).

In Wexford Town? People can certainly get that in parts of the town, depending on area from Siro and/or Eir

Wexford is doing really well with fibre, better than most other counties in Ireland so far. Wexford town has lots of fibre and many of the villages in the southern and eastern parts of the country already have FTTH.

Wexford is doing really well with fibre, better than most other counties in Ireland so far. Wexford town has lots of fibre and many of the villages in the southern and eastern parts of the country already have FTTH.

What villages have ftth? I've only seen Wexford town mentioned for ftth, and in a very small area at that. VM are making great inroads into the county with Enniscorthy already done, work has started in Wexford with New Ross and Gorey soon to follow.
