What happens if I used €13 of the €15 voucher? Is that the whole voucher gone?

why they changed the name is beyond me.
They're building a cross-European brand, and it turns out that "Hailo" means nothing outside of the UK and Ireland cos it's an English pun on words. The Irish CEO was on the radio talking about it at the time.

Maintaining multiple brands for the same product is difficult and it also means that when and Irish person went to Berlin, they wouldn't automatically recognise/trust the "MyTaxi" brand, and vice-versa.

Uber, Google, Hoover, * etc. mean nothing too! Yet they are now world wide brands.

Mytaxi is such a boring, Germanic style name IMO. Hailo was interesting and like the above could have become a widespread brand with the right marketing.

Uber - Is an actual adverb, but not widely used and nothing to do with Taxis.

Google - Is a play on the word Googol, the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. Not that most English speakers would know that, never mind foreign speakers.

Hoover - A brand name for vacuum cleaners that has now entered normal speech.

In Germany they could have kept the Hailo brand, surely in Germany it isn't going to be 'My Taxi'. Just the logo would be the same. I dunno I think they should have stuck with Hailo for some reason, even in normal conversation you'd say 'can you Hailo a taxi or I will Hailo one now', now it will just be 'get a taxi there', no mention of company names. You wouldn't say, get a 'my taxi' there would you. Same way as you'd say Google that there, there than Yahoo that for us.

I think that had to have been worth something for the company. But hey, I am not a marketing genius so obliviously they know what they are at.

Yeah it was way better and the app is worse now. The drivers have been ranting to me about it too. Friends of mine had no idea what Hailing was but it didn't really matter. MyTaxi is pretty poor, especially as it's something people might be saying anyway.

Meh. Its a taxi app. Couldnt care less what they call it.

I press a button to pick me up and he picks me up with no fuss.
I actually prefer this app becuase i am able to swipe away the notification that im in a car and dont have to be pressured into rating him like the hailo app.
I press 1 button and a taxi is on the way

Also couldnt care less if the taxis are complaining about it. Just leave me alone and dont talk to me.
They will complain about anything regardless.

    Im in dublin though.

Any complaints I've seen from drivers are that it's bringing them to the wrong place to pick up passengers. If it's true, that's something passengers might care about.

Vouchers now disabled altogether for legal reasons apparently.......

Id hazard a guess and say thats the customers themselves putting in the wrong address.

I'd hazard a guess of it being **** gps chips inside the majority of phones. Having worked on location apps for android and iOS there's a huge difference in accuracy. Some people will just mash the screen until something happens too

    Very strange, back again now!

This is the page I was taken to when the vouchers stopped working... http://de.mytaxi.com/aktuell

Plus Hailo included more then just Taxi's, it also included Black Cars service (which are licensed PSV's, but not Taxi's). In the US Uber has already expanded far beyond just Taxi's, UberPool, even food deliveries!

The future of such services are on demand self driving car services, they won't have anything to do with "taxi's", eventually Taxi's will become a quaint idea from the past like horse drawn carriages. Seems like a bad branding move IMO.

Forgot to mention, my MyTaxi experience was quite different from any Hailo trip I've had. Any Hailo trip I did before was an actual taxi and they entered the fare into the app from the meter.

The MyTaxi driver was a regular car (came up with the reg on the app, not the taxi number) and they had no ID on display and no meter - the app calculated the fare. Like Uber when I used it abroad.

Was Hailo always actual taxis or was that just coincidence from my previous trips?

The fancier hailos weren't taxis - just nice cars, all my mytaxi's have been taxis so far.

That is very strange, it should be only Taxi's!

Hailo was normally Taxi's, they did have an extra level called Hailo Exec which was for Limo's and Black car services, but that cost extra and those vehicles were still licensed PSV's (Public Service Vehicles).

    That was hailo executive no?
Hailo plus was a scam, would regulary get something like a scoda or a ford focus the few times i got a free one.

    Hailo had three levels:

Hailo: Taxis, but any old banger
Hailo+: Taxis, but only newer cars over a certain spec
Hailo Exec: Limo's and black cars, think 5 series BMW's etc. Weren't taxis, but are licensed PSV's (like the old Hackney license).

The downside of these black car services is that they aren't allowed to use bus lanes.

I'm not sure what MyTaxi has, haven't downloaded it yet.

That sounds like what used to be known as a Hailo Exec. I only ever got one of them once as a "free" upgrade (but ended up getting charged more... Got a credit for it when I got in touch with Hailo). The other annoying thing about them was that they're not supposed to use bus lanes. Presume MyTaxi has something similar but there's nothing on their website about it.

Edit: Started typing this ages ago, saw others replied before I did :o

Thanks for the codes btw OP!

This sounds like what happened. It was a nice Audi A8.

They didn't give a breakdown of the cost but it was higher than expected - I didn't query it as the voucher code covered most of it. €10.20 for a 4km trip in clear traffic (5mins).

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,119 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

The charge for a 4km trip would be €8 (€3.60 + 4 x €1.10). More expensive if its over 3 minutes per kilometer.

I'd be careful with the fancier ones too, they do tend to overcharge forcing you to contact hailo/mytaxi. At least last time it had free bottles of water!

Sounds weird, if I remember correctly in the Hailo app, you had the option to decline the "free upgrade", which is always a good idea during peak hours when you definitely want to be using the bus lane. Maybe it still has that, you just didn't notice.

BTW Hailo+ was added when Uber launched here. Uber would only accept bigger, nicer, newer cars on their service while Hailo accepted any old banger, thus they launched Hailo+ to compete with Uber, however even then it wasn't as good a service.

This is why I always still try Uber first, generally better vehicles.
