Not for long though as the whole CIE Group totters towards the abyss.

Is CIE really a group in anything but name these days?

That old timetable, would it not have made more sense to timetable for a commute into Limerick instead of Dublin? Or at the very least, Limerick and Dublin.

There was / is a service from Nenagh to Limerick each morning.
Nobody uses it because it is too slow, and probably more expensive than the faster buses.

The IR site has Heuston-Castleconnell 9:00 on Saturdays changing at Portlaoise. Is this correct?

I'll be taking my bike on the Ballybrophy train tomorrow morning, haven't brought a bike on it before just want to confirm it's ok to bring a bike? There was no bicycle symbol for the Ballybrophy leg of the cycle?

Should be fine, lots of storage space without blocking doors etc.

No problem in bringing a bike.

Suggest you leave it by the wheelchair space (by the disabled toilet) as that has the most room and won't get in the way.

If joining before Nenagh make sure you travel in the front two carriages. The train splits at Nenagh with the rear two carriages forming the 0745 Nenagh - Limerick (a service which people do use by the way - referencing an earlier posting).

At Ballybrophy when joining the Dublin train, board carriage E. This should be the rear carriage. Bike space is at the door closest to the Drivers Cab.

Apologies. Your post didn't specify which service you were travelling on. When you said morning I assumed you were Dublin bound.

The train from Heuston will be a Mark 4 set. The last carriage at the Dublin end has a luggage area for bikes.

Putting your bike by the wheelchair area (assuming no mobility impaired customer's are travelling!) still applies.

No problems at all bringing the bike on the train from Ballybrophy. I left it in the special requirements area but sat right beside it in case any passengers with special requirements boarded the train.

I'll never understand why more people don't use the Ballybrophy train, it's a great service for €10. People obsessed with cars costing themselves a fortune when a viable (superior in my book) alternative option would be just as good for many commuters. I have a car and use it when I need it but the price of diesel and motorway tolls make the train far better value.

I'd love to see a few politicians use it.

    Many on board?

Because it takes 2 hours, whereas the less direct train via LJ takes just over 1 hour.

Why would anyone opt for a 4 hour commute when they can do it in just over 2?

That's very useful to know if you live in Nenagh, Roscrea.....

Well, if they were all on the train then that line wouldn't be top of the closure list! :D

The 17.55 ex Roscrea is quicker to Limerick with changes at Ballybrophy and LJ than the direct route.

No, I'm not from that part of the country and have no business or other connection to there... but I plan to travel it before it closes. Missed the Waterford-Rosslare line, despite living in Waterford for 5 years.

€6 adult return fully flexible fares on the new IR booking engine from Limerick to Nenagh and Roscrea (likely all stations).

This should help the line gain a few passengers at least.

The €9.99 Castleconnell to Heuston fare seems to have been replaced with €14.99, unless I'm missing something?

Edit: €9.50 is child fare oops!

€15.99 now, but it comes fully flexible at least for an extra €3.

Is there a ticket machine at Castleconnell station?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,092 ✭✭✭The_Wanderer

Is there a ticket machine at Castleconnell station?

The station is staffed (gatebox) but not 100% sure if they issue tickets.

If not the guard on the train will issue you a ticket.

Have you booked online? If so there is a procedure in place to give customers their ticket. PM me for further info.

Deserted until Nenagh, when about 10 hopped on.

It's a pleasant train journey to Ballybrophy but ultimately it's too slow for me to use it again to go to Dublin. I can either go to Limerick Junction or Castleconnell so I'll choose the Junction every time.

Is the majority of usage of the line to Ballybrophy to connect to the Dublin-Cork train versus Limerick?

I wonder how much it would cost to straighten the whole thing out. It would benefit the development of Greater Limerick in particular if such a commuter route was encouraged.
