Gerry Adams being invited onto the Late Late Show in 1994.
The host hadn't the decency to shake his hand despite the invite.
RTE also brought along Austin Currie, Dermot Ahern, Jim Kemmy, Michael MacDowell and Hugh Leonard in a deliberate attempt to attack their guest.
In fairness to Adams, he came out looking the best from it!

From an RTE point of view, you'd be listing things forever with them, the constant recycling of guests between their shows is horrendous.

I think a poster on here once had a story of how their parents saved for a once in a lifetime trip starting off in Russia of all places. They save up and buy a first class plane ticket, only to find Joe Duffy rocking up as part of filming for the "Who do you think you are?" show. Nice use of tv licence money there.

Those TV3 late night gameshows shouldn't have been allowed either, it was basic thieving.

no harm in asking him a few hard questions, that guy had it too easy for too long

Nothing to do with the hard questions (and I dislike Adams) but if you have a chat show and invite a guest on then don't do what RTE and Byrne did!

Roy Keane walking out on the national side over not sitting in 1st class.

Dunphy pissed on air for 20 odd years
You can broaden that sentiment to include Giles and a few others too - who make little effort to actually learn about the football and teams teams they are watching, and just rely on outdated information, stereotypes, and pure guesswork.

It shows a real lack of respect for your viewers to present them with that standard of analysis.

I also think RTE lacks a really, really hardhitting presenter of political debate shows who is willing to put people on the spot and force them to answer tough questions.

First thing that came to mind. Credit to Gaybo, he may be a sanctimonious old goat, but he knew well how to dole out the rope for people to hang themselves with.

Peewee really looks like a bond villain. Odious creature.

The broadcast of the angelus is a shameful Irish TV moment, repeated daily.

To subject a growing number of non-believers to listen to that stupid donnnnng, donnnnng, donnnnng and look at images from a 1980's scenes of Ireland calander.

    Bog-backwards RTE. Shameful, regressive arseholery.

Something tells me you would be falling over yourself to congratulate RTE on their diversity if they replaced it with an Islamic cultural appreciation segment.

I'm no fan of the Catholic church, but if this really bothers you then don't watch it. It's cringey yes, but relatively harmless in my opinion.

I'm going to go for moments on TV where I was actually ashamed to be Irish. For a few seconds that is. It doesn't take me too long to get over these things.

I can't remember exactly when it happened but it was at the start of the economic downturn, probably some time in 2008. The World's media were camped outside of the Dail waiting for our finest politicians to make a statement on the Bank Guarantee or something or other when out waltzes this fine fellow below to address the media. The mortifying shame of it.

No don't agree with that at all.

RTE should be secular and not have any moments of prayer or reflection in its broadcasting. It's archaic.

There is far too much Catholic bias and reporting of church events in RTE.

This disgusting drunken barrell of lard. The fat, alcoholic tub of guts and EVERYBODY in the audience should have their heads split open with a shovel.

The Irish version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. There was an episode where the contestant used his 50/50 to eliminate two answers. He still didn't know the answer so he asked the audience. A large proportion of the audience (something like a third) picked one of the two answers that had been eliminated.

The stupidity of the audience aside it's incredible that they actually broadcast this rather than asking them to vote again. I've never seen this happen on the British one. As in I've never even seen one vote go to an answer that had been eliminated. I assume if they did vote for an eliminated answer it just wouldn't work. The makers of the Irish one were too stupid to take that into account.

When RTE forced their way into a communion mass and accused the Priest of child abuse. Turns out he was completely innocent, and ruined people's day. And nearly destroyed a man's reputation.

Don't forget of course the estimated €1 million in compensation they had to pay out.

Sure no worries, can just take that from the infinite supply for TV licence money, no hassles there

What about that time on the Ray D'Arcy show when he had a jack nicholson impersonator on and the audience thought it was the real thing?

Yes folks we want more TV licence off you please!

You could make the same argument.
Sure only a certain % of the population likes football and they show that.
Only X% of the population likes Fair City and they show that
Only Y% of the population wants to watch the weather forecast and they broadcast that., etc.
Only Z% of the population wants to hear about Catholic news, and they provide some.
You have to pick and choose the bits you like, and watch those. Not every programme will be entirely tailored to your own personal interests.

I was only 9 at the time but I seem to have recollection of Irish Boxer Francie Barrett's mam being interviewed and asked if she ever suffered at the hands of her son. He was a traveller boxing for us in Atlanta 96.
