Tv licence

    We have moved into a new house and do not have a tv. There is an Ariel in the attic. We have iPads and a desktop. Do we need a television licence.

    “television set” means any electronic apparatus capable of receiving and exhibiting television broadcasting services broadcast for general reception (whether or not its use for that purpose is dependent on the use of anything else in conjunction with it) and any software or assembly comprising such apparatus and other apparatus;

    I really don't know if the desktop and tablets fall into this category. Can someone help please. I got the above quote from the tvl licence website. Thank you.

    No. Get rid of the ariel.

    Thank you snowflaker, it says that a statutory declaration form is needed if gave had a licence before to state that no longer gave a tv and then an inspector will come to verify. I presume I should just get rid if the aerial and send in the form?

    They don't ... yet, but the proposed re-vamp as a 'media licence' will also over them.

    The current proposal is to charge the new licence to all on the database of households put together from property tax payments (that list will be very useful for providing potential targets for future taxes and levies)

    Not sure when such a proposal could be put through, it would be a brave minority or coalition government that would try that one. It might have to wait to see if the days of all majority and no risk 'old politics' returns. :)

    Thank you both for the replies, is it ok to watch RTÉ player on the tablet and not have a licence? I just want to be very sure what I'm doing is right. Does the aerial definitely need to come down as we might get a tv at some stage

    As long as you don't have a TV in the house your fine ..... if you watch TV from a PC or laptop or tablet device and the only way you can watch it is by use of the internet that is fine, it's perfectly legal and no needs for a license at all . As long as a device is physically incapable of receiving a physical signal from an aerial or a satellite dish basically you can't plug in a cable into a device from a dish or aerial.

    It would save hassle is all. The TV is the important bit.

    Thanks everyone that's brilliant, the other 2 things we have are an xbox and a wii but could get rid of them if they are not allowed. This is the last question, are they allowed?
