I used to actually work in DSP and do these cards. They're trying to roll them out for everyone, not just for people in receipt of DSP payments. The idea is that, eventually, you'll be able to use it for all public services down the road.

I have one, it never comes out of my wallet :pac:

Got the letter during the week as well...it will be handy for me as I do unfortunately use DSP as well as a travel pass so will definitely be of use.
Always handy to have in case you ever need to use DSP services ..

It's easier to chop cocaine up with it as the edges are less curved and the card itself is thicker in comparison to most other cards, such as a debit card.

Yip. Had to get one in order to claim the two weeks paternity leave.

Yes, I have one. I had to get mine when I signed on. It is the most pointless piece of plastic I have in my wallet as it is not accepted by the DSP as ID. To get the card I had to provide them with all the usual forms of ID but even after I had my card, I still had to provide all the usual forms of ID when at the office. Same happened my husband, he has the card and was still treated as if he was brand new on the system.

Are you sure you don't use any DSP services? What about children's allowance? I know a lot of people seem to forget that's a DSP service.

WTF?? That's bloody ridiculous, and not the norm in any of the offices I worked in...

A few years ago they started issuing those things to everyone, regardless of whether or not you actually use any DSP service. Then they got rid of that, and when the cards expired they weren't re-issued to people who didn't need them.

Don't have one, haven't been asked to get one, have no reason to have one.

    I dont have children.

See - i dont see why i need it. Seems like a pointless exercise for me.

Yep, I won't specify what office it happened in but needless to say, very bloody irritating!

The only thing I can think of is that maybe they want everyone to have them?
I know there's a sign in my local post office that says anyone applying for a passport for the first time after (some date in) 2016 needs to have a DSP card so maybe they want us all to have them?

I think the cards don't expire for 7 years so I don't think any of them have ever expired. From what I know they started off being issued to people who were claiming Jobseekers payments

I got one after some horrible abuse from an Irish Rail inspector over my paper travel pass. When I went to the DSP office and explained, the person there got quite angry and wanted to have the inspector questioned. She said that they weren't issuing the cards to DA recipients yet, just jobseekers but got mine arranged to be done the next day. Never heard anything back about the inspector tho :D

Got a letter recently inviting me to an appointment for one of these cards. The letter went to an address I haven't lived at for 22 years!
Dept. of Revenue have my correct address, both departments have my PRSI no., clearly their IT Systems live in different worlds.

I got one ostensibly because I had a travel pass (oap) but in fact, I think it was to identify non-nationals. Three friends (two Brits and one Spanish), all with Irish husbands, all got notification to get one, but the husbands never did.

why on earth would you think the purpose was to identify non-nationals ??

If you want to take the theory test for a driving licence the only id they will now accept is a public services card.

My brother on DA got his AGES ago, hubbie got invited for one a few weeks back and I got an invite in the door this week for the end of next month. You'd think they would have invited us as the same time
A good friend of ours living close by has had his for years.

But agreed with another poster, they apparently cannot be used as any form of ID.

Is your wife the recipient of your CB though?

I got a letter to get one 3 years ago, slipped my mind as I was very heavily pregnant, turned out I was in the hospital after a cesarean for the actual appt. Forgot about it completely. Got a letter a whole year later telling me that if I didn't get the card within 4 weeks that they would cut off my CB as it was the only social welfare payment I was getting at the time.

    She doesn't have one either.

This is not a DSP card or service!

    It's a public service card.
It will allow you access revenue, motor tax, passport application's, social welfare and a host of new online services.
Think of it as a portal.

I was at a talk on it recently in my Dept.
DSP was just asked to roll it out.

Don't think just because you're not claiming social welfare you're getting nothing from the government. People are getting children's allowance.

I got a letter this week too. I thought it was because I am now pregnant and it was one of the things you had to do because of that.

but i dont see how the card does anything for me. I already have access to revenue as its online so the card wont come into play. I dont tax a car, i have a passport that wont need renewing for many years, i dont use social welfare.

Not to don a tin hat but im not going to do this, or at least dodge it for as long as i can. I dont see why they need it.

I lost my passport last year and only missed it about 2 weeks before I was due to fly..the passport office wouldn't accept the card I had as it didn't have my photo on it so I had to get a new card and then apply for new passport.

This sounds like confirmation that it's not necessary.

It will be at some point in your life.

I think they are also looking at incorporating driving licences at some point.

Just to add..it's also Not a national identity card.
