What do you mean by hit and miss?

I have a can of caramel that I bought for banoffee, but got a complaint that banoffee is "too heavy" from my (silly, crazy) husband. So I'm thinking of using it in some sort of biscuity sundae with cream and fruit. Or something with dark chic, coffee, brownie, icecream etc. Will be for adults so decadent is the key. Any ideas? Also would it work in a biscuit cake?

You could add it some brownies.

What's our equivalent of kosher salt? I want to smoke a salmon, and I need to spread it on a salmon with sugar to get all the moisture out of it.

    Coarse sea salt. Think Maldon.

    Hiya,

I wanted to buy Pink Lady apples in Aldi to be told they are no longer selling them. I bought fresh lasagne sheets but they were all stuck together and ended up putting strips of them (some 2 or 3 layers thick).

Over at Tesco, I bought a packet of their big oranges but they were pretty dry.

Not sure if this warrants a thread though!

I'd say a What's Good or Bad in the Supermarkets This Week type thread would be very useful. On the subject of oranges, Mr. Dizzy loves the easy peels and you never know until you eat one whether they're dry and chewy or not. M&S ones can be worth the extra expense because they're usually lovely but the last lot were awful.

I got apples labelled Pink Lady in Aldi 2 weeks ago and they were horrible, tasteless, grainy things. So maybe that's why they've stopped stocking them!
Useful thread idea - it might help me avoid another Pink Lady disaster, and who could forget the great Lidl tenderstem brocolli fiasco early this year!

    Sounds like a great thread.
I hate the way Aldi just discontinue things!

I also think it's a great idea, I'm looking forward to it!

As for Aldi discontinuing things, it's a very annoying trait that tells me "loyalty" may be a one way street there. I read that they are doing very well here but the annoyance factor could slow that down if they keep it up.

And........the ultimate annoyance (they all do it) is completely rearranging the store so nothing is where it was the last time you were in. As a carer, I used to have a very limited time for shopping, I knew exactly what I needed and where everything was........until they did it again. I just didn't have the time to waste meandering around the store trying to find things and was so stressed and frustrated by the time I got to the check-out that I was dangerous. They think it's smart marketing but I say - think again.

I doubt Loire intended the thread to be an opportunity to vent but I feel a lot better having got that off my chest :o.

When time is limited, I find tescos click and collect (or delivery) to be great. Always perfectly picked fresh food, stored well an while the products, in some cases, might be slightly cheaper than Aldi, yiu totally avoid impulse buys so in the long run save money - well I do anyway!

I'm a big Aldi fan and have been going there for years. However, the lack of choice and products being discontinued has me going to Tesco more and more.
I'm also noticing that the prices for things sold in Aldi are not too much more expensive in Tesco so it's nearly worth my while just going to Tesco instead. Anything sold in Tesco though and not sold in Aldi is very expensive!

Plus the staff in Tesco don't give a sh1t! Some serious management needed in that company!

I agree but I don't think that attitude is confined to Tesco, I feel my blood starting to boil when I see the way fruit in particular, is handled in Dunnes. Their staff are generally pleasant and helpful but I feel swindled when I see loose apples etc., thrown onto displays or combined in a box. The damage isn't immediately visible so "who cares" I guess but rotting bruises a day or two after purchase infuriate me. It's not fair, it's wasteful and it shows contempt for the shopper and their hard earned cash.

Well, after 2 weeks with my new kitchen I am like a pig in the proverbial! My old oven was about 30 years old and was down to only 1 hob working. Things were so bad that when I went to my mother-in-law recently and cooked up a dinner she wondered why I was only using 2 rings! I'm still struggling with 4 rings now as am so used to sliding pots in and out of the heat! The oven itself was almost dead...taking about 15 minutes to heat up and needed to be at least 20 degrees hotter to get to the correct temp. The new one is a dream and even beeps when at the required temp. It even has a glass window and a light inside the oven. I sat there watching lasagne bubble away the other night!

You need to make yorkies or a cake, something that rises!

Yesterday I bought a bottle of "make it saucy" Southwest sauce on spec in Dunnes, Cornelscourt as I'd never heard of the brand before and I have to say, it is one of nicest, most flavorsome condiments I've ever tasted and I'm really keen to try some of the other ones in their range. The southwest one is a mayonnaise-based smoky sweet chipotle sauce, I tried it with fries and it was fabulous, I'd say it would be great in a burger or in a sandwich too.

10/10 - would (will!) definitely buy again :D

Just treated myself to a bag of real chip-shop chips and... they're horribly undercooked!!! -As in, completely pale, no hint of brownness anywhere. Bringing them back isn't really an option so to say I'm massively annoyed and disappointed would be an understatement :(

Bought in Capri, station road Bray btw.

chipper food reheats amazingly in an airfryer, if you have one. I would do them in the oven or grill otherwise.

I often prefer chipper chips reheated in the airfryer than when they were first done.

many "italian" chippers do not have family working in them anymore, the staff they get in either do not care or simply do not even know what chipper food is meant to be like. I get the oddest doner kebabs in an itialian chipper near me, which is usually oddly only Asian staff, I only bother getting chips if the owner is there, who really seems to pride himself on doing things right, don't think he is Italian but does a good chip.

    That's very disappointing.
Cassoni's down on the sea front is the best. I used to go there in the 60s and 70s with my parents and grandparents on summer days out in Bray, and sometimes Mr. Dizzy and I will drive down from North County Dublin just for their fish and chips.

Yes, I did indeed turn to my beloved airfryer and it helped cheer them up a good bit, but it did leave them a bit dry and cooked all the fresh vinegar off. :(

Did I see tomahawk steaks for sale somewhere in the past week, or did I imagine it?

A tomahawk steak is just a bone-in ribeye (or cowboy steak) with the bone left long. Any real butcher should be able to do this for you.
