House share toilet rules?

Is it unreasonable to ask your housemate to refrain from drinking tea/water before bed as toilet use beside my room wakes me up and could be awake for an hour at a time?

    Yes.

Maybe just ask them not to flush

    Absolutely.

Any sane person would tell you to piss off.

I'll chip in with another 'yes'. Just for balance.

    Yes.
    Wear earplugs.
    Move room.
    Live by yourself.

Thread needs a poll to sort through the data.

Yes! Would you not offer to swap rooms with them?

She doesn't. The no flush rule is already there. The house is old and walls are thin.

General rule of thumb in house shares was not to flush after midnight unless really required.

EDIT: Sorry, just saw your response. Nothing you can do really, we're all at the beck of nature in this sense. I'm sure she's already aware and trying to be fairly quiet

Cool ok. Just wanted to get a general concensus. Suck it up.

Yes. You can't put an out of hours notice on the bathroom.

I wasn't. I just wanted her to perhaps drink less big huge cups at 9 and 10 at night.

7-8 hours is a long time to go without water and it's important to stay hydrated. Yes, it's unreasonable.

I keep a bottle of water beside my bed and go through 500ml to almost a litre of water during some nights. I don't have to go to the bathroom until the morning though. I'd probably cut back if I did.

    Remove the toilet.
Without the toilet there is no problem.

    You're welcome

This thread needs audio. I want to be able to compare the noise she makes to my horse :D

Have you heard yourself? You expect her not to drink if she's thirsty so as you're not disturbed? Whys your comfort more important than hers?

How about a bucket and a rag in each room. Don't have to walk far and stay warmer.

Or just get some ear plugs if you are such a light sleeper.

I agree with others, OP, and think that requesting someone change an indirect behaviour isn't reasonable. However, I do sympathise with you. I've had an experience like this before and it's really unpleasant. Try to make changes that would lessen the noise - oil the door hinges, pad the door frame, put down a mat, move your bed away from that wall, tack up some foam sheets, etc. And then ask your flat mate to be quiter. I would see nothing wrong with being expected to tiptoe into a bathroom after eleven, and make an attempt to be gentle with my "stream".

Put cling film over toilet bowl.

If that fails getting expanding spray foam and fill toilet.

What if she needed to drop the kids off at the pool, your suggestion is a bit crazy
