I still find it baffling how they think an unintelligible phone call with Pat Nevin is broadcastable. Even Joe Duffy would be saying ... "Pat.. pat.. pat... that's a terrible line, we'll phone you back and come back to you after the break".

I can usually understand him fine on the podcast. Maybe they clean it up from the radio version?

It's one area I do have a problem with on Newstalk. Sound engineering can be poor.
Especially with Tim Vickery and a general fondness for Skype calls which include the phrase "We will go for a break and call you back".

Where do we all stand on Kilbane at this stage? I'm getting really tired of him. Inane, tame and inoffensive. I really want Woolly back... Could they not even get him back in for a day to talk about his new house, the decorating, the dog... :(

    I like Kilbane. Decent insight.

I think the fact that outside of Ger's smugness and Joe's holier-than-thou-ness, I can't tell the rest of them (what, is there like 20 of them? Or 4 of them?) apart is the biggest problem.

lol.. true... That should be one of those eliminator questions in a table quiz.

    Joe
    Ger
    Nathan
    Richie
Kilbane (I refuse to call him 'Killer')
    Dave
    Adrian
That new guy, who sounds like he's a transition year student (Eoin is it?)

    Have I missed anybody?

It feels like I hear and see kilbane every time I turn on the radio or tv.
Fair play to him for getting all the work, but having him in the studio for the regular show, football show and extra bits, interviews, co-commentating duties, it's reached saturation point for me.
He tries to get involved in the gaa stuff but he'll offer nothing at all for the summer. At least wooly had good considered opinions on gaa, soccer etc.
Even on the soccer, kilbane is too bland and boring.
He comes across as dead sound, I like him as a bloke, but as an analyst I'm sick of him and his blandness now.

Johnny Giles last night on about Ronaldo really re-iterated why Giles is not relevant anymore.

In essence, the great players of his era, Greaves, Charlton, Best, Law were all team players and Ronaldo is a greedy so and so whose only attribute is scoring goals.

He scoffed at the suggestion that Ronaldo could be seen in the same light as Pele or Best.

To be fair I don't think he said that. He acknowledged that Ronaldo is (and will be considered) one of the all time greats. The point he was trying to make (I think) is that Ronaldo has this uniquely supreme self-confidence and ego, so much so that it really doesn't bother him if he isn't involved in the play for 10-15 minutes. So long as he scores the goals (which he does brilliantly), his overall team play/contribution doesn't bother him. It's all about the goals, and he does that part of the game very well !!

Agreed on the comments Re Kilbane. He seems like a dead on, sound fella but he's just too bland and he's on way too many channels too frequently. He's becoming the modern Mark Lawrenson. Fair play to him for getting all the work though.

You really have to wonder about them sometimes in there at Off The Ball. There they were today, lamenting about how such an "amazing talent" as Eoin Morgan would not get recognised walking down the street in Ireland. Surely the core point of the issue is not that the Irish fans necessarily turn their back on Eoin Morgan, but rather the fact that Eoin Morgan choose to turn his back on his country. They have any amazing way of turning something completely on it's head.

Saying he turned his back on his country is emotive stuff anyway. He wanted to play test cricket and that's still not something that's on offer with "his country". We're happy enough to take on board people who "turned their backs" on their countries when it suits us.

If Morgan really wanted to play test cricket he would have made a much bigger commitment to being a test match cricketer rather than going to the IPL to earn money when his county in England are playing first class matches.Truth is his reason for switching was as much about the greater earning potential and prestige of playing for england and not solely the desperation to be a test match cricketer as clearly he doesn't seem 100% focused on persuing that goal.

He really doesn't deserve the recognition OTB seem to want for him precisely because he doesn't represent this country anymore.

From a personal point of view he was 100% correct to decide to play for england if that is what he wanted but they shouldn't be wondering why we aren't lavishing praise and attention on him when he isn't representing Ireland anymore.

The reason for all of this is because the two guys on the show are about as politically correct as you could get. They ooze this holier than thou attitude and like to think of themselves as new-age free thinking men. You might put Rory McIlroy in a similar bracket to Morgan but they never stop sucking his cock either. It's almost reminiscent of the worship of false gods (which to me is every god).

Okay well that was my phrase not theirs. My point was that it's a very unusual read of the situation to place the blame for Eoin Morgan not being a household name at the feet of the Irish fan, when he made the decision to move and play his cricket for another country. They were almost portraying Eoin Morgan as the victim in all of this.

Not to mention that cricket is nothing in Ireland. How many badminton players do you know?

Chloe Magee and her brother Sam.. :pac:

Anybody listen to the paper review. I know Declan Lynch was on it, but was it any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Jayesdiem

Good but with a massive emphasis on political correctness as usual. We are all snowflakes, each as beautiful as the last.

Just listening to it now Jay. Good stories... Interesting to hear David Walsh's story about Paula Radcliffe, and the tweets questioning the goals in the FAI games (never heard about that before, seems like everybody knew about it)... The Eoin Morgan stuff is coming up later I think...

Oh and the traditional Declan Lynch rant about gambling has just finished. :D

Very true, Peter, there's a strong thread of anti-nationalism in their thinking.

But of course. It's not politically correct to be a nationalist anymore is it? We must never say that it was an odd choice for Morgan to play for England or that McIlroy is not Irish and never wanted to represent Ireland. We must give both of these men our full and unconditional support. If we disagree with their choices, I'm afraid we are nothing more than bigots and animals.

Jesus above as a whole this show has been on the slide for years and I now put on 2FM for 7-8
The opening half hour is cringe worthy at best these days and the format and contributors are stale.
Think ger said Giles slot is 15 years going, sorry but move on... Giles is out of touch and babbles on about football in the 70's
Pat Nevin adds nothing, thornley on Wednesday is stale, and the Friday shows are a waste. The crappy quiz slot sweet lord shout aloud for 20 minutes
Kilbane now missing more nights than on the show get a new guest presenter

The whole show could do with a shake up and move things about. Cut the soccer show out and do it once or twice a week,an hour long rugby slot could be good once a week, the whole America sports slot is gone and no NFL podcast although Mick does one on balls.ie now

Actually there's the crux of it,losing Mick as producer has been a massive blow. The whole show has gotten rambling, unfocused and tangential

Spot on. It's just a mess and the presenters' brand of quaint formality is the main reason. I unsubscribed to the podcasts a few weeks ago and I dip in and out if there is a segment of interest. I tend to enjoy the paper review but how many more of those can I put up with when the conversation invariably regresses to issues surrounding doping in one form or another. When will their obsession end?

Interesting the discussion at the end about the lack of female representation in horse racing, and how trainers would be most likely to pick a male name. And then how few female sports writers there are in Ireland. Surely Joe, must look down their own roster now and again and realise, that they are not exactly leading the way. I was surprised that Marie Crowe didn't point that irony out to him.

But Marie Crowe and Declan Lynch were good together. Really enjoyed that one.

How are OTB going to cover up the loss of GAA rights during the summer? Especially on Sunday's

The Newstalk app has a podcast called Off The Bench, which is about women's sports.

As far as I can tell, there is just one episode, and it's from 2015.

Enjoyed the interview with Jason McAteer tonight. Some funny stories as well as talking a bit about his depression. Interesting to hear he's patched things up with Souness these days
