I'm guessing the Saints have a really high opinion of one or two of the cornerbacks in the draft tomorrow. If they are both gone before it gets to them then I think they'll pick up the phone and take Butler but if they can get their guy in the draft, which would be a hell of a lot cheaper, then we are stuck with Butler for the year unless somebody else comes in late.

I'm getting the feeling that this is Brady's last year. No chance they would hang on to Garoppollo otherwise imo.

I don't think it's his last year, but despite the shape he's in, it can still all end with one hit.

I think keeping Jimmy is more a sign of how highly they rate him. They could franchise him next year; crazy way to manage the cap, but if they really wouldn't trade him for a high pick, then not unimaginable.

I hope we keep Butler. The D did well last year, but played some really poor QB's. The D needs to be better this year, and having two No1 corners is a great start.

I'm based in the US so its not so bad. Draft kicks off at 8pm but the Pats don't usually end up picking until around 12am so i can avoid 4 hours of waiting to be disappointed this year.

You've no round one or two picks??? Mid Friday evening.. unless you trade... hmm wait it's Bill belechick, you'll probably manage to get the first pick overall

He won me my Fantasy Football league a few years ago. Would love to see him as a Patriot.

I think all the speculation about trading Jimmy G is just media nonsense. I think he's the heir to Brady and there's nothing in the QB pipeline that comes close to giving us another Jimmy G type. Just look at the nightmares other teams have in trying to find the next franchise QB. We've created a lot of cap space and you have to wonder will they tag him for 2018 or give him his extension then? I think they will and I expect Brady to play with us for at another least two years. Maybe then he'll move home to California and play out a couple of years with his childhood team the 49er's. And despite him having 5 rings, becoming the unchallenged GOAT and sticking it to Goodell in style. I think his fanatical competitiveness and love of the game remains undiminished and for that I just can't see him retiring after 2017.

We've exercised Cooks 5th year option, so. We have him for at least 2 years barring a trade or cut.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭JaMarcusHustle

    Barring any trades, we're done.

    DE Derek Rivers (Youngstown St)
    OT Antonio Garcia (Troy)
    DL Deatrich Wise (Arkansas)
    OT Connor McDermott (UCLA)

Though we have a lot of space to fill with UDFAs.

Only 4 late picks but it doesn't look so bad once you factor everything in

Pats have 20 spaces to fill to get to the 90 man roster for training camp. So there will be about 10-15 UDFAs and maybe a handful of veterans. I think BB still has got some surprises up his sleeve as there a few high profile players out there and $20m in free cap space so maybe Jason McCourty & Jared Odrick perhaps.

Highest profile UFDA we've signed so far is LB Harvey Langi http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/harvey-langi?id=2558055

I wonder if Ryan Clady has recovered from his latest injury. He might be worth a look if he is willing to take a pay cut.

Here is the list of our UDFA

    Josh Augusta, DT, Missouri (source)
    Adam Butler, DT, Vanderbilt (source)
    Austin Carr, WR, Northwestern (source)
    Cole Croston, OL, Iowa (source)
    LeShun Daniels, RB, Iowa (source)
    D.J. Dean, CB, Arkansas (source)
    Cody Hollister, WR, Arkansas (source)
    Jacob Hollister, TE, Wyoming (source)
    David Jones, DB, Richmond (source)
D.J. Killings, CB, Central Florida (source)
    Jason King, OL, Purdue (source)
    Harvey Langi, LB, BYU (source)
Kenny Moore, CB, Valdosta State (source)
    Max Rich, OL, Harvard (source)
    Dwayne Thomas, DB, LSU (source)
    Jason Thompson, S, Utah (source)
    Damarius Travis, S, Minnesota (source)
    Corey Vereen, DE, Tennessee (source)

Interestingly we picked up Austin Carr who even before the draft was being touted as the next Edelman. I have seen him play a few time typical small white slot WR and has talent. Be interesting to see if can make that work in the NFL.

Butler showing up to the optional practices and Saints drafting a cb with the 11th pick seems to pretty much be the final nail that potential deals coffin surely.

The real Butler drama kicks off this year. He's UFA now, if we don't pay up another team will get a 28 year old pro-bowler without giving the Pats a thing in return...

Was just thinking - if Jimmy is being kept to be Brady's successor whenever he calls it day, it's sad to also think that not only are we losing the GOAT QB, but our cap hit at QB is likely to dramatically increase. It's highly unlikely that Jimmy would be willing to sign the same team friendly deals that Tom did.

I spent the last two hours going over tape and look for as much information as I could get about Kenny Moore from Valdosta State as I'd never heard of him or them before we signed him as a UDFA.

Anyways he is listed at 5'9" but looks a lot bigger on the field and plays a lot bigger too.

Highlights video shows you all the good stuff about him, never gives up on a play, seems like a good reader. He seems slow over the first five yards but his top end speed looks pretty good.

He started out as a corner but played SS his last year. When he gets you he is not letting go of you but when watching some footage of their games I seen him brushed off a couple of times and also not where you'd expect him to be on other plays.

It's very hard from limited tape to really rate him but the one thing he has going for him is his attitude and he seems like a very sensible kid.

I found a Q&A thing done with him in December and he was asked Brady or Manning to which he answered Brady, asked who'd win the Superbowl he said Patriots. So based on those answers and his overall profile I like this kid. :)

We've given Josh Gable a tryout apparently. He's a kicker in the indoor football league who gained some fame for a series of trickshot videos, as well as videos where he claims to be making kicks from various lengths and into the wind. Probably kicking the tyres more than anything, but Gostkowski does need some competition in camp this year more than ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,976 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Gostkowski's problems last season all came because they wanted him to keep the ball in play on kickoffs. To keep them in play he has to shorten his kick, he couldn't kick all the way through the ball as he had been doing for years. This in turn affected his goalkicking because it was difficult for him to kick through the ball as he had done for years. I'd expect those problems have been completely ironed out by now.

It's still no harm to have some competition in camp but I don't see it as anymore necessary now than in previous years.

Not doubting your point, but it really is bizarre that a professional kicker has tough kicking at two different strengths.

Non-NFL fans have difficulty enough understanding that it's someones job just to kick. Imagine trying to tell them that the kicker can only kick at one strength.

I didn't buy that excuse when it first came out and I don't buy it now. I thought about it and there were good points made on it just like yours but I dont buy it.

Gost has had problems in the past and gotten over them. I honestly think its more mental for him. Kick offs and field goals are two different techniques anyways so either way he would never really have been kicking the same way for both. So now they ask him to throw a 3rd in the mix but for kick offs and that then somehow affects his kicking for field goals? Dont buy it.

the point being though that previously the follow through on both were the same, ie he kicked full and through the ball.

Now on one kick he has changed his technique and swing and it "could" be a case that this change in technique "could" be a factor in not following through on the kicks he has missed.

Everything anyone says about the misses are all speculation and guesswork. Just that one is not an unreasonable one to factor into the equation.

this was what I had said on the matter back in October.

To be honest, moving on from that, I believe that his biggest issue was mentality and over thinking things. You could see him pushing shots to the side to factor in where he may have missed on one side before that.

The kicking technique could be a factor to consider, but as the season went on, I think the technique issue more and more became less of an issue and his confidence and mentality became a bigger issue.

I have always felt its a mental issue with him. His previous struggles in New England were to me mental issues also. Remember the last time he was missing all over the place and now that is gone. Like when you are having a few sh1t holes in golf and you cant get yourself out of the rut. Your technique isnt changing you are over thinking thing or making stupid mistakes.

I dont think there is or was ever anything wrong with his technique and the guy is a solid kicker and there is no way in my mind that the follow through excuse is the reason why he was missing field goals. As I said different techniques for both anyways.

Possible Nate Ebner pt 2 seems like he has raw talent that needs work

Seems like a good physical guy and a solid ST player, but almost all of his defensive highlights came on the back of blown blocks.
An NFL caliber lineman will swallow him up.

He's too small to play on our line realistically though, he may been seen as a practice team player to develop as a linebacker. He's definitely got some good downhill play and athleticism.

Oh yeah he will be nothing more than a special teamer if we bother with him at all. Same with Ebner. You know Bill and Co are all about finding guys suited for ST.

You'd never know how he could turn out. There really isn't enough to go on because of where he played college football. He could turn into another Ninko if we are lucky.

Interesting us of the rules regarding LGB

    http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/05/10/legarrette-blount-patriots-offer-compensatory-pick/
BOSTON (CBS) — The union between LeGarrette Blount and the Patriots may be over, but not entirely.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the Patriots utilized a “seldom-used” tender to make a contract offer to Blount. The offer is for $1.1 million, according to Howe, and it gives the Patriots the choice to either match any offers from other teams or receive compensation in the term of a compensatory pick.

    https://twitter.com/jeffphowe/status/862387982761951232

Considering the Patriots have already signed Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead (while also hosting Christine Michael for a workout and having Dion Lewis and James White set for important offensive roles), it seems likely that the team would choice to go the route of the compensatory pick compensation. (More on compensatory picks here.)

Howe added that while Blount does not intend to sign the offer, his options for signing become limited to just the Patriots once training camp begins. So the clock is ticking on Blount’s free agency. MMQB’s Albert Breer noted that such a stipulation could hamper Blount’s ability to garner a contract from other teams.

    https://twitter.com/AlbertBreer/status/862394469739528196

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the use of the May 9 tender — as it is so called — has been used “only a handful of times” before.

Blount led the NFL with 18 rushing touchdowns last year, setting career highs in touchdowns and yards (1,161).
