Strange timing - having just gotten a not guilty verdict last Saturday in his second murder trial with a lawyer who seemed confident that there were holes in the first conviction.

Yeah agree, i think the consensus was that he would appeal the 1st conviction.

Hard to fathom (assuming he was guilty) how you can throw away your life as a result of ego

Even if found not guilty, he was found guilty on firearms charges so would be in prison for many more years to come.

I doubt he would have any left after civil cases were dealt with.

It's a strange one though, he goes fighting charges and then commits suicide. It doesn't fit together at all. I wonder if there was drugs in his system? Only explanation for something like this that I can think of.

Butler signed his RFA tender so he's eligible to be traded.

Reports out of New Orleans are saying the Pats have a handshake agreement in place to trade Butler for the 32nd pick. So barring a contract issue Butler is gone.

Not surprising even though I really wanted to keep Butler alongside Gilmore but after paying Gilmore and having no pick in the first 2 rounds it was low odds of happening. I fully expect BB to trade the 32nd pick for more picks on draft day.

If that agreement is indeed in place, then why has Butler taken so long to get the trade sorted? Nothing could be done without him signing. Maybe it's just hope more than sense, but I'm not convinced he is leaving this season.

    Next 24hrs will be interesting

Somewhat Patriots related, Aaron Hernandez committed suicide last night.

A sad end to a tragic story

Patriots visiting the White House today several players not attending and also Brady is not attending for family matters. So kinda puts the hyperbole of the other players not attending in its place.

Sad end to his story, showed so much, and could have gone on to do so much with his talent, his life and for his family. Sadly he pushed the self destruct button, the timing of this is unusual but who knows what his mental state has been. A waste, of talent, a waste of a life.

Yeah apparently he was broke and the Pouncey's were covering his legal bills up to recently.

So true, it really was a complete and utter waste of a life. He was a guy who had it all, a guy who could have played out his career as part of the greatest TE tandem in NFL history. But it wasn't to be, he might have left the hood, but the hood never left him. He couldn't let go of the gang affiliations and the kind of friends you don't want around. And that not only destroyed his life but it ended up costing him his life. And if any good could come from it? Then maybe the NFL could use his story during the annual rookie symposium, to wake up younger players who might still have some bad baggage hanging around them.

May be a bit too soon or insensitive, but is Hernandez's cap space affected now? I know there was implications had he been found guilty. Just wondering now he has passed away does the, unfortunately phrased, dead money go too?

We cut him as soon as he was arrested. We ate something like $3m the first year and $8m the next with dead money in the cap. Our cap won't be affected anymore.

But the Pats still owe him signing money from the big contract he signed and they were fighting with his lawyers not to pay for breach of contract but since Hernandez died technically as an innocent man, they may now have to pay.

Might explain why he did what he did; he wasn't getting off that murder conviction.

It shouldnt affect our cap and most of the articles are going into what ifs. Right now the argument is over the amount of money he was owed for 2013 which sits at just under 6m. That wont affect our cap because we already took a hit on it. We released him and are not on the hook for the rest. Also those articles mentioning guaranteed money need to read up what guaranteed actually means in the NFL. It doesn't mean you are getting a lump sum or you are going to get all of it. It just means it you see out your contract that money is guaranteed and the rest is performance based or bonus. Seems like a lot of these articles banging on about it havent really done any homework.

yeah just seemed to be conflicting stories about it all. I think where I was getting confused was if he was found guilty, then apparently we would have got €3m back into cap space for next year. Again, not entirely sure how accurate those reports were, but they were fairly widespread. I had thought that we still had that $3m on the books and it would have disappeared.

Schedule's been released. Was looking forward to heading along to the Raiders game... only to find out today it's gonna be in fcukin Mexico City and not Oakland!

Was that not known months ago? If it wasn't officially released it was certainly well know for a long time

What? He was in as a convicted killer. I know he was cleared of the other murders, but he was still a guilty man. Now perhaps he would have been successful in his appeal, but to my knowledge that had not been heard?

Makes the timing of it even weirder, though you do often hear a criminals lawyer mention how confident they are of getting a conviction overturned regardless.

The Pats, by taking the more honourable route were on the hook for his cap money regardless.

Massachusetts Law is what has him dying an innocent man. Its the fact he had his appeal in which the law covers him.

He would have lost the appeal as they had nothing that was going to overturn the conviction. They were possibly going to try use the case he just got found not guilty on but they would have failed to make a connection that would get him free.

Rapoport claims that despite Butler and New Orleans having a multi-year deal agreed, a trade looks unlikely from either side.

To me that must mean we wanted the Saints original first round pick, and not just the 32nd back.

We've also signed Gillislee as the Bills have refused to match our offer. Per Schefter.

More positive news (on the face of it) from the Butler contract situation.

Why would you agree a multi-year deal with a player, to reportedly make him one of the higher paid in his position in the league, but baulk at the asking price, which surely would have been well sounded out during talks?

Still feels off to me and would not be counting him in for the coming season just yet.

I suppose its a good position for the Pats to be in, get a 1st round pick in a deep enough draft class, with a guy ready to be the number 1 corner already in place or head to the season with two pro bowl calibre cbs and use the draft to supplement other areas.

It's a very deep class for CB talent this year, so there's no way we'd get a pick high enough to warrant giving up a known commodity like Butler.

After all of this FA activity, I'm hoping to see OL and LB wrapped up with the draft.

Silver lining to the Pats having no pick in the 1st round tomorrow night is that as fans, we wont have to wait all night to the end of the 1st round for BB just to trade out of the 1st round and fcuk our draft excitement over.

Lol don't bother staying up for it, would be the year where the Pats trade Butler to the Saints for number 11 overall, package that with Jimmy Garoppolo to Cleveland and move up to number 1 overall to take Myles Garrett.

I'm based in the US so its not so bad. Draft kicks off at 8pm but the Pats don't usually end up picking until around 12am so i can avoid 4 hours of waiting to be disappointed this year.
