Another great social issue of inequality for the lads to get their teeth in to tonight. Another populist cause for them to jump on board. And OTB do their usual trick of pre recording the person representing the other side of the argument, so that they can then bring somebody on air to help them tear apart every point of the other side of the argument. And Kilbane is just a yes man for everything that Joe Molloy says, there's no need to have him on the show.

They did ask the FAI bloke to come on at same time, but he refused. An international team threatening to boycott a match is newsworthy, whether you're interested in the story or not.

I think the women's team have pretty legitimate grounds for complaint and deserve better treatment. The OTB boys are fond of soapboxing, but that doesn't invalidate what the International Women are threatening to strike over.

He related it to Coleman but it was very very thin. And pathetic. I can imagine him having his arms folded while writing the piece if that was at all possible.

    Oh My God...

The social justice warriors that are now at the helm of OTB are gonna get the week out of those David Moyes comments, are they.. He was joking ffs, they were laughing...

And I'm losing all respect for Kilbane, jumping on board with the "outrage". You would have thought that he would have brought some common sense to the whole thing.

I think you're starting to sound like Paul McWilliams. Maybe you should step away from the radio

Believe me, I never thought I'd say I stop listening to OTB. But there's really not much point any more. The show is just taking a nose dive.

This show has become almost as much about politics and liberal rights as it has sport in the last few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 908 ✭✭✭Jayesdiem

Totally agree. Sanctimonious rubbish. There are great alternatives though. If you want great in depth GAA coverage, look no further than their former colleague Wooly. For rugby, Shane Horgan is great whenever he is on Second Captains.

It's almost as if they're being influenced by and trying to mirror what their old colleagues on Second Captains are attempting.

Absolutely adore sport. Can't get enough of watching it.

The problem nowadays is that there are too many hacks trying to make a career out of talking about it.

Listening to journeymen pro's/former legends/jumped up radio presenters giving their opinion on games/various sports we have already watched with our own 2 eyes, is becoming grating.

Market saturation. Even Monday night football is getting annoying at this stage, always looking for an angle to try and be clever in their analysis. Theres absolutely no end to it these days. And they take themselves incredibly seriously, they are more important than the sport itself.

Listening to Miguel Delaney/Ken Early/Joe Molloy or Jamie Carragher musing about what Jose Mourinho really meant in press conference is a load of old bollix. Absolute nonsense.

I agree. I sometimes can't believe there's a programme that devotes THREE HOURS to sport every day for four days a week, TWO HOURS on Fridays and up to FIVE HOURS each on Saturdays and Sundays. A lot of it consists of men gossiping. The Football Show can be very weak at times.

The Football Show can be very weak at times.

Yeah that was the part that took the biggest hit when the other crowd left. Ken Earley used to be funny. Seems like every time I turn on the football show, usually 9.30pm or so when I'm having a shower, it seems like Graham Hunter is always on. Very hard to hear when the shower is running, cos of the terrible phone he is always on. And he comes across as an arrogant, aloof, name dropper. And Kilbane, as I've said many times before, is just a yes man for Joe Molloy. A dissenting voice, like a Woolly/eamonn dunphy/george hook type character is badly needed.

God I'm sounding like a broken record now.

I hope they read this thread because most of it is fairly constructive and I miss the old OTB, even with the current crew. The show is just so mundane! Case in point: a rugby podcast entitled "Kieran Marmion wants to keep improving". Why would anyone listen to that wishy washy rubbish? ALL players, in every sport, want to keep improving but regardless of that, it doesn't an interest podcast make. No player interview is interesting for that matter, particularly with the lick arse questions that emanate from the mouths of this lot.

    EDIT: not blaming Kieran Marmion

There were problems with the Live feed to the Premiership game today so they played snippets of the Paper Review podcast.

The always brilliant Dermot Gilleece was on the panel today. Such an experienced, articulate, knowledgable and funny story teller.

Listening to him talking about Arnold Palmer was very interesting. Great radio.

It's still the best segment. It's always varied and interesting.

Problem was they probably didn't have too many people tuning in to find that out.

Paper review podcast is top in charts, is there a way to see numbers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,697 ✭✭✭elefant

I thought the Ogie Moran interview was excellent.

I loved the fondness with which he spoke about the importance of his club. For all his All-Ireland medals, it sounded like the personal relationships he had with friends and family from his home town were the dearest memories he has from his GAA career, and that's what it should all be about really.

What was the ballbag thing all about? Was it a live or prerecorded segment? Came up on padcast so I listened, they sounded pissed

Cliona Foley was on the Sunday Paper Review yesterday. My first thought was that she was on it recently enough. And I remember somebody on here mentioned before that she seems to appear on this segment a good bit.

I'm bored, so I've looked at who has been on the Sunday Paper Review in 2017 so far...
    • 1/1: Kieran Cunningham & Declan Lynch
    • 8/1: Dick Clerkin & Kieran Shannon
    • 15/1: Paul Kimmage & Malachy Clerkin
    • 22/1: Mario Rosenstock & Keiran Cunningham
    • 29/1: Tommy Conlon & Cliona Foley
    • 5/2: Gary O'Toole & Mick O'Keefe
    • 12/2: Ian O'Riordan & Paul Rouse
    • 19/2: Gavin Cummiskey & Brendan O'Brien
    • 26/2: Brian Kerr & Gerry Thornley
    • 5/3: Kieran Cunningham & Declan Lynch
    • 12/3: Cliona Foley & Paul Kimmage
    • 19/3: Stephen Kenny & Dan McDonnell
    • 26/3: Andy Lee & Declan Lynch
    • 2/4: Gavin Cummiskey & Kieran Cunningham
    • 9/4: Dermot Gileece & Tommy Martin
    • 16/4: Cliona Foley & Fionn Davenport
So Cliona Foley has been on the Sunday Paper Review three times this year, which is a lot more than most... but it turns out that Kieran Cunningham has the most appearances with four!

Yes I know that is all completely useless information but I'm easily distracted :o

My favourite duo would be Paul Kimmage and Gary O'Toole, but I know that would be the worst nightmare and an instant turn-off for some people.

    I'd really enjoy that pairing.

It occurred a couple of times last year so hopefully they'll both be on together again sometime in the near future.

Anyone listen to the Saturday panel on kids and sport? It was excellent, some great ideas and quick wins but no joined up thinking to actually put these practices into place. Well worth the listen, motivated me to get back jogging!

Cliona Foley is excellent, that is presumably why she is on so often. In and around Cheltenham, she was on with Kimmage and it was one of the best paper reviews I have heard. She's always informative and interesting. I have only listened to some of this weeks one so far and it's been good again, although I sometimes feel that Davenport goes around in circles without ever really making a point.
Its a shame that its podcast only as I used to time our Sunday drives so that we were in the car for the majority of the paper review. Its not quite the same listening to it at 7 o Clock on a Sunday evening or even the next day.

Cliona Foley is painful, but she is a she, and this is Newstalk so that is presumably why she is on so often. She is marvellous at talking and talking and talking and then talking some more when someone else is talking and then she does some more opinionated and very ilinformed talking.

Let's not get into that that cackled laugh she does...

She drives me mad as well. That accent, and she's constantly interrupting people to correct them.

In Your opinion she is excellent. I never knew who she was until I heard her talking about something and I had to look up who it was. She was ignorant of the subject being discussed.
She is on so often because she is female. Tokenism. That's all.
