An M2 costs 30k+ more than an R. It would want to be distinctive.

Here it would, not across in Brexit land. Guess I'd better start saving.

Over on the UK GTi forum it's been confirmed that the Sevilla alloys in dark anthracite/red stripe are going to be an option for the GTi for MY18 builds (from wk22 onwards).gl4910_gti-18-sevilla.jpg

Hopefully they'll be available here and the pricing will be similar to the Pretoria upgrade price for the R - here's hoping anyway.

The point being made is that the two cars, A Golf R and a BMW M2 are in completely different price brackets. A golf in the UK costs about 30k, where as an M2 costs 60% more, if you can buy one at all. There is just one for sale currently on autotrader, a 2nd hand one that's over 50k.

Those sevilla alloys are lovely looking. I'd prefer a non red stripe version though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

The non-red stripe diamond cut version is standard on the GTD. They'll be a pain to clean though.

Well I mean I'd rather the anthracite colour without the red stripe. I'm not a major fan of multicoloured alloys and I think that's one of the reasons I can't really take to the Austins as is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

Yeah, I know what you mean. The red stripe isn't great but at least they're not diamond cut.

I think they look after-market - and not in a good way. Am I the only one thinking "A-Team" van?

All the wheel offerings on the new GTI are just different degrees of crap-ness imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Donnelly117

I wouldnt be a big fan either, they remind me of those Christ awful E63 M6 alloys bolted over the top of a completely different set of wheels.

If you took off the "top" ones I think theyd be pretty decent though

I don't know. I would rather a car that doesn't look like its fast, but is... rather than a car which looks fast but isn't

This to me is what makes the Golf R a great everyday car...most people just see a Golf with nice wheels.

Yes and no. I enjoy the sleeper look. But I'd be pretty annoyed buying a 45k car and knowing people will often have to double take to see is it the real thing, or it's half price R-Line sibling.

Anyone who's interested / knows their cars will know easily enough. For most people (non car people), a Golf is a Golf is a Golf.

What I mean is - if I was to pump money into a car, I would rather pump it into the performance if it was bog standard engine and HP.

I'm all for a car looking well - it just has to be able to back it up :)

Agreed. And it's not like the "all show and no go" option is cheap. The 1.6 diesel Highline with a few bits added on, such as the R-Line kit will be pushing into the mid 30's! I think I'd rather be looking at a 6 month old GTD when you get to that price point.

Just tipped into the car in front of me. Foot slipped while at lights.

F**king gutted. 20 odd years of driving without an incident :(

Cracked the reg plate surround on mine is all. Will check it out to see if anything done to the ACC sensor.

Hard to tell with his. He seemed genuine so there is that but I'm f**king fuming with myself. Of all days when I can't get a drink

You'll get a warning on the dash if the sensor has moved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Yeah I'd imagine the car would throw up an error if you'd damaged that sensor. Hopefully not because they're expensive to replace / re-calibrate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,045 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

No error so at least there is that. Cheers

Now the wait to see what damage is done to his :-/

Indeed, cheapest 151 R on Carzone is 31,500. Mind you the amount of 2 year old GTDs that are 25k and less is frightening.

Do you mean you are seeing a lot of GTDs for under 25k? As I'm looking at them a lot over the last and you need to go back to 141 to get under 25k from what I can see.

Review of the GTI performance and R in english:

Review isn't great, but the video has some good shots of both.

4.2s is quick. Looks like they understate it to keep it in its place in the VAG lineup.

Yes, on the day I posted that, there were at least 3 151 GTDs under 25k.

Mate of mine was being offered 21-22k for his mint "fully loaded" (it has every option ticked) 141 GTI last week.

A few questions for the GTI owners if you don't mind:

A few years ago I bought a Golf r-line (just the trim spec) after I fell in love with the styling and build quality. It was a 1.2 comfortline/highline type spec. I thought it was a good purchase but I quickly came to hate it :( The seats were terrible, the drive and handling were 'boring' to say the least, and although the 1.2L was nippy with the turbo, it was way too underpowered. I had the blinkers on when I bought it, no doubt. Had to sell it a year later and go back to a 3 series. You learn from your mistakes!

However the GTI has always caught my eye, especially the Mk7 I think it's stunning. It's coming time to change and although I said I'd never get another Golf, I can't escape the feeling I need to try the GTI.

    - What's the handling like compared to the regular Golf models? More sporty or around the same? I don't expect it to match a RWD 3 series but I would want it to be an enjoyable drive.

    - What are the seats like, is there an option for the side supports to inflate/extend? My biggest gripe with the seating of my original golf was the side supports were too far apart and I wasn't comfortably held in place like the 3 series.

    - Do you reckon the GTI is more of a thief magnet?

I had a Mark 4 GTI and really liked it's engine but it wallowed in corners, we had a Mark 2, Mark 5 and now a Mark 6 1.2 TSFI (110 Bhp). While I can't fault the car for power I find the seats uncomfortable compared to the seats in my S40.
I also think the Golf R / GTI is understated and looks too much like the regular Golf or Golf R-Line, it just does not standout as a performance car.
My preference would be a 1 series M Sport or 2 series Coupe with more comfortable seats and that steptronic 8 speed auto box!
Depends whether you want a drivers car or a mass produced replica drivers car? Just not convinced that VW produce drivers cars.

    That's nonsense tbh.

Your best bet is to sit into a GTI and see how you find it comfortwise yourself. The seats are well bolstered but the bolsters aren't adjustable like you see in some BMW's. Neither is the seat base extendable, again like you see in BMW's. But I find them very comfy. Only gripe is I'd prefer if I could lower the seat a little bit more. Sometimes feel a bit perched on it.

The ride handling of a GTI / R cannot be compared realistically to a baseline car. Very different beasts. I really don't think you'd be disappointed on that front.

Again, a test drive will tell you whether it's for you or not.

A low powered comfort version of most cars will be very different to the top of the range performance models. BMW 316D compared to a M3 for example.

Bearing in mind a Golf GTI is never gonna be close to an M3 ;)

Very different cars at very different price points (as is an M2) so the comparison is about as relevant as comparing the car to a Lambo.
