Reg plate does not match car according to motortax.ie

Hi all,
I went to view a car that I liked from donedeal - private sale.
I am pretty happy with the car in general, pending a mechanic inspection.
However I just ran the number plate through the motortax.ie vehicle status enquiry site and it comes up with a completely different make/model of car.
Is it possible there is a genuine reason/error for this, or should I walk away now?

Sure you have but worth double checkin. Is it visible on done deal?

Otherwise as Fibble says walk away.

What does motorcheck or similar sites say it is? Best to leave it really. Unless its really rare, there are probably other clean examples out there.

The car is a vw Passat but the checks come up showing as Renault fluence. Also the car is originally a UK import..

Make sure you have the reg right and do a check on motorcheck.ie just for verification. The motortax.ie site might be wrong.

If both are coming up as a Renault Fluence then report it to the Gardai. Car is either stolen or not registered at all, they just pulled the plates off some other car.

did you confirm the reg while viewing the car. some people can and might, alter the reg on MS paint to prevent insurance fraud. but if the reg is definitely right, and the cartell is saying its a fluence, then run. cartell will double check for you, for free! post a link to the ad?

The only proper way if to check the log book against the chassis number that's stamped into the car frame, not the one stamped into a plate that's riveted onto it.

Either way do a full check on it for outstanding finance etc. etc.

OP, look up the old UK registration on the car's log book or car history report and enter it into this site:

The car could be genuine but I find 76k miles to be very low for a 6 year old UK diesel car especially a typical motorway workhorse like a Passat. Also that touchscreen stereo/sat nav is aftermarket not VW.

It does defy belief how a Cat B write off in the UK can be re-registered over here without raising any flags.

Revenue don't (but should) check the U.K. history to avoid allowing a cat b from the uk or anywhere be registered here. A uk cat b, c or d can be legitimately exported from the uk (uk cat A can't) as they aren't locked down on the dvla system unlike here where cat A & B vehicles are locked down on dept of transport system in Shannon.

While I'm sure you are correct about it being CAT B and I'm not hugely surprised, have you got a screengrab or something Mintoe to prove it?

Wouldn't want to rubbish someones car for sale without seeing the proof first

I am indeed running for the hills.
Unfortunately I didnt see your update before I'd paid a mechanic to check out the car - he found the same as you.
A small price to pay though.

I guess for any uk import one should run the motorcheck or equivalent first - then get mechanic to check the rest.
