Well, the good news is that Lillian will be on next Thursday and Friday night, and the following week as well (not sure what days).

Nice finish there by Lilian with a very topical yet subtle Grace. This is what differentiates her from Fiachna's constant plugging of his band and his wife's shop.

She said last night that she will be on Friday and Saturday so Fiachna obviously off next week

Yeah, I heard her say that alright. Funnily enough, she said about having the "Friday feeling," and moreso tonight. She mentioned that she used to work every weekend, so never had the Friday feeling for 14 years :) She was hardly on Late Date for all that time, was she?

I have a shocking memory but she may well be there that long, cant remember if she took over after Maxi or whether there was someone else in between. Only thing, though, is traditionally weekend Late Date traditionally comprised Saturday and Sunday nights. They only changed it recently for reasons which totally elude me.

I think it was last week he played a live Flowers track and after one of the (many) texters told him how much he loved hearing the band live, Fiachna told him not to worry, there would be plenty of gigging this year. So for the divilmint, and also out of frustration, i lobbed over an oul text along the lines of "Fiachna, there are quite a few Late Date listeners who would love it if your band gigged every Friday and Saturday night of the year." Disappointingly, he did not deem it worthy of reading it out.

Alf would have read it out. All he seemed to do was to read out negative comments about his shows :)

Lilian was doing Weekend Late Date even when Val Joyce was doing weekdays!

Funny you should mention Alf. I did send him a sarky text one time which, sure enough, he proceeded to read out on air. I was having a go at how he did nothing but play requests all night, it went something like "Requests, requests, requests. Infernal business...." and so on. So he reads it on in his own inimitable fashion and then says, "it's a pity you didn't leave your name. I'd have played you a request!", which I thought was pretty good in fairness and I did eventually warm to him a bit. There were a lot worse around than Alf.

Ps I'm not one of those nuts who sit around texting radio djs all day!! Think i've sent around 3 texts ever. Lillian read another one out one night and I'm still basking in the glow of it since!!

Fiachna ignored your third text by the sounds of it :pac:

Ha, i think creedon ignored one too so that'd make 4. Fiachna will be glad to know there'll be no more, he can play the Flowers to his hearts conent. I'm gone into retirement ;)

Plenty of plugs and well wishes for Flowers' gigs there, but modesty forbids Fiachna from playing a Hothouse Flowers song as requested by a listener. Good man

Ha ha, loads of requests for The Rose but Fiachna has to let it rest for a while because he "THINKS" he played it last weekend. And the week before that my good man, and the week before that too, et cetera ad finitum...

Looking at his Twitter, there's mention of the Folkfest in Kilkenny between the 7th and 9th of July. The Hothouse Flowers will be performing, so no doubt he'll be off on the Friday and Saturday.

So that when you hear Cathal you know you have to be up for work in the morning?

Only works for Mon-Fri 9 to 5ers, though.

Good Evening Fellow Late Daters..... Lilian is on duty so it's going to be a Plug-free, Rose-free, Hothouse Flowers-free zone :D

Fiachna's off doing a gig tonight, so Lilian is presenting :)

When was the last time Fiachna actually presented the show two weekends in a row? Seriously they should just give Lillian the two weekend shows and get it over and done with.

Sure it was her slot for 14 years but it was taken off her so that Fiachna would have a job, he must have some pull at mountrose

Lilian announced last night that her next "guest appearance" will be on The Weekend On One next Saturday morning (the 8th). She's finished with nights for the time being.

At least she is still in demand as a stand-in, but it would still be nice for her to have her own show or for her to regain her Late Date slot. Maybe there will be another series of Sister's Are Doing It For Themselves in the near future.

That's a bit unfair on Fiachna. Unless you know exactly what happened Lillian, it's unfair to blame him.

Alf McCarthy came in for similar criticism and he even had to point out on air that he had nothing to do with it. I sem to remember he was quite emotional about that. There seems to have been a back-story, but I don't think anyone on this thread knows it.

I love when Lilian comes back though. She's perfect for this slot.

You're right. I actually don't mind Fiachna - he plays some great stuff and has a good voice for radio. But I'd just prefer if there was a bit of continuity.

Dont think anyone's blaming Fiachna for the sidelining of Alf and Lillian or truly knows what was going on behind the scenes in Montrose around that time.

What seems odd to me is that you'd give the weekend role to a guy who is a jobbing musician and obviously not going to be available at all times during the year, taking it from someone who was not just hugely popular - probably one of the most liked and respected presenters at the entire station - but is so available that she appears to be ready to fill in on a number of different slots, often at very short notice. A bit demeaning if you ask me.

Would make more sense to me for Fiachna to be the one doing the filling in, or at least paying his dues before he landed the regular gig. Jim Lockhart, another musician, did this for years and did it very well. I quite miss him now that he appears to be off the scene.

Lillian possibly has the weekend mornings as a regular gig now. When Carol was signing off on Sunday she said something to the effect of "My year here is finished. Thanks for your support etc."
She must have only had a years contract. Another very underrated broadcaster.

    Agreed.

Great if Lilian gets a permanent slot but Carol is probably my favourite over the past year or so. When you think of some of the dross that is put out her programmes were really a breath of fresh air.

It must be so difficult to get a permanent slot. She should do what Tubridy was up to and try and get into BBC Radio 2.

Cathal is going to be off from Sunday to Tuesday, which means that there are going to be three guest presenters presenting. Sunday night will be Joseph O'Connor (author), Monday night will be Lisa McInerney (author) and Tuesday will be Robert Mizzell (country music singer).

Nope, I haven't heard of any of these either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

O'Connor might be decent enough perhaps, not his biggest fan but he's alright sometimes. Will play a bit of Dylan, Clash, Bruce, Van etc not so much recent stuff.

Lisa McInerney, early 30s probably...Cork native and author of well received if overrated novel, was on the Tommy Tiernan show recently, wasn't the worst. Probably be listenable at worst.

Robert Mizzawhat?? You got to be having a laugh surely

sadly it's only a matter of time before the RTE Gold relay kicks in at 11pm each night.

Like what happened at BBC Radio 2:

Joseph O'Connor was pretty good last night I thought. Not too much chat and played some good stuff. No sign of anything by the sister though 😂
