I have to get from Dundrum on the green line to kylemore on the red line, and just trying to work out which ticket is best to do this. I'm not sure if I am understanding the system correctly - do you just get 1 ticket for 2.90and walk between the stops in town ? I'm puzzled because it looks like 290 is the fare from Jervis to kylemore anyway,
I have a leap card but I'm thinking if i use it i'd have to tap on and off and it would take for 2 separate journeys.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Hi 180567, you just need to tap on at Dundrum and tap off at Kylemore, no need to tap on/off when you transfer between lines. If you do this you'll be charged for 2 journeys.

LUAS fares are based on zones travelled, irrespective if you travel between the Red & Green lines.

    https://www.luas.ie/interactive-map.html

A trip from Dundrum to Kylemore would be from Green Zone 2 to Red Zone 3, which is a four zone trip.

If using cash, you buy a ticket from one stop to the other.

If using LEAP, you must tag on at Dundrum, tag off at St Stephen's Green, tag on again at Abbey or Jervis and tag off again at Kylemore. You will still only be charged for the full Dundrum to Kylemore trip.

    Full fare list is here:
    https://www.luas.ie/assets/files/RPA%20Marketing%20Campaign/Luas%20Summary%20Fares%20Sheet_Valid%20from%20Mon%206th%20March%202017.pdf

Another alternative for that trip is Dublin Bus route 17 from Dundrum to Crumlin Village, and route 18 from there to Kylemore Road.

    That's the wrong way round.

You have to tag on/off each time you board/alight from a tram as per the link below:

    https://www.luas.ie/more-information/
    Using Leapcard on Luas

When using a Leapcard to pay for your fares you are required to touch on and off to ensure that you are charged correctly. If you are in doubt place your card in the orange pocket at the ticket vending machine (TVM) to check your history.

This procedure applies to all Leapcards including taxsaver Leapcards.

When travelling across both lines you must touch on and off each time you board and alight a Luas. This will ensure that you are charged for the correct zones. If you fail to touch on and off you will be charged two fares one for each line.

EG: You want to travel from Dundrum to Heuston. Touch on at Dundrum, touch of at St Stephens Green. Touch on at Abbey and off at Heuston. This fare will be calculated at two zones at a cost of €1.80, if you fail to tag off you will be charged €2.13 for the Green Line trip and €2.29 for the trip on the Red Line.

I hope you don't do that, as you'll be paying an excessive fare twice for each journey.

will you still have to do that when the City Centre extension is open? Doesn't make much sense - the number of zones you travel is the same whether you do the extra tags in the middle or not.

That seems counter-intuitive and the reverse of the way it works in other systems.
Is it going to remain this way when the lines are connected?

Luas will need to answer that. How Leap is used on their service is down to them.
