Exchange EU licence to Irish one - first issuing date

Hello - looking to exchange my 12-year French license to an Irish one. Although I could continue to use my French license in Ireland forever, the main reason for me wanting to exchange is that Irish insurance premiums would be lower with an Irish license (and exchanging EU license is just some paperwork to fill out).

Does anyone know whether the first issuing date on the Irish license would be the same as the first issuing date of the original EU license (ie: 12 years ago for mine).

If the first issuing date on the Irish one is when I get the Irish license (as opposed to the first issuing date of my French license 12 years ago), then I won't be able to rent cars when going abroad / in France (as most car rental company want a license that is over 2 years old). That's the reason for me pondering whether I should exchange - but I cannot find any specific information for this.

I'm after the first issuing date (ie: when I passed the driving test), not the valid from date.

    Thanks

Once you exchange for Irish licence, issue date by each category (I assume it's category B you're after) will be the same as your original one from French licence.

So if passed your B driving test and got your first licence in France in 2005, then once you exchange it for Irish licence now, your Irish licence will state issue date of category B as 2005. It will also indicate code 70FR which means that your test was passed in France.

Additionally, your driving licence document will have a issue date of the document which will be 2017, but that is meaningless.

    So no need to worry.

It is the date when you get the license, not the document itself. So you'll keep your experience
