GamerCon Con

Organisers of the GamerCon gaming event at the National Convention Centre have apologised to people who have had to queue for hours to get into the event.

24,000 tickets were sold for the GamerCon convention.

Many of the tickets were bought by families and many young children were in attendance.

Some had to queue outside for three hours to get into the Convention Centre and were told they could get in only when others left, as the building was full.
GamerCon founder and event organiser Ferdi Roberts apologised saying they had miscalculated the traffic flow for the event.

He said people were not expected to spend all day at the event and that it is not unusual to sell more tickets than a venue can hold.

Not expected to spend all day at the event? For a GamerCon? What did he think would happen?

If I had come up from the country with my kids, stayed over in a hotel and queued for 3 hours to be met with even more queues when I got inside, I'd be off to the small claims court

    Pure greed.

Dysfunctional? Mismanaged? Over-subscribed? Non-adherence to regulations? Sounds like a typical event organised in Ireland. Garth Brooks at Croke Park comes to mind.

Dublin Comic Con in the same venue - which is run by entirely different people and was a great event - had a limit of 8,000 tickets a day and at times felt very crowded. No idea how they thought they'd get away with selling 12,000 tickets a day, especially when the centre has an absolute capacity limit of 9,400 people.

Especially when you see this tweet from the organiser...

Expecting 20,000+ people? In a venue that can only hold less than half of that. Ridiculous planning, even if he was thinking of foot turnover. Surely you should only sell enough tickets for the max capacity or is this "the done thing" with conventions?

I have a feeling that it was just a case of pure greed in getting the punters to pay up!

I'm sure there'll be plenty of Fallout from the Mass Effect this poorly organised event will have on people.

This was just greed. Feel sorry for families out in the rain for hours only to be told to go home.

    Demand a refund and compensation.

It seems to have been a sham from even before that.
I was suspicious when there were no games designers, or games developers as guests. Games fans like me expect people like Rhianna Pratchett, John Romero, etc. who have been guests at Irish conventions, Romero lives here, but I asked them this, and they said words to the effect of "maybe next year, but this year, we're focusing on more mainstream audience"
And I was like - huh? What's more mainstream than the people behind best-selling cultural behemoths? Rather than some people who review them.
It's like having Barry Norman as sole guest at the Dublin Film Festival...

Good point. Romero was at and involved in the Comic Con - I got to play a Doom deathmatch against him :)

    Yeah, great guy.
But it seems to be something put together by someone with not much knowledge of the scene, trying to be there with guys, Nozin' Aroun' style.
The guy in charge, "Ferdi" Roberts looks like a smug tosser anyway. http://irishtechnews.ie/ferdi-roberts-interviewed-founder-of-gamercon-coming-to-ireland-march-18th-19th-2017/

Probably should have got a bigger venue at least. How many does Eirtakon get?

The convention centre is itself a sham. Its food facilities are dire.

    Game

    Game

They do everything in-house, from when I've been there. All very basic barbeque quality hot dogs and burgers, a limited menu - different areas serving the same stuff.

The organiser was threatening lawsuits against people for calling the event a scam before it started. I think lawsuits will be going the other way now.

You guys should read the posts from people who were at the event on the event's facebook page, heartbreaking stuff.

As well as the #gamercondublin on Twitter.

120e on a family ticket PLUS paying to see some eejit YouTube celebrities on top of that?!

Yes, not even as I said, relatively minor figures in gaming.
There's a few Irish indies, but an event like this needs some major international clout.
Roberts has screwed the thing up. Can't wait to see what happens tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

If they were so oversubscribed, why were they advertising attendance so heavily even still today and yesterday? Why no guests? Why weren't people warned via social media about overattendance before they wasted their time showing up?

The only way to save it is if 5-6K people decide to just apply for a refund now- at least that might mean that those going tomorrow won't be put out like what happened today.
