I really don't get why they'd give Gilmore the sort of contract he got and then nickel and dime one of your best defensive players

TBF the market says he's not worth more than $10/11m a year so no point going over that. If the market was saying higher, he would have been gone by now.

Not overpaying and not falling into the trap of just giving a player what he wants as opposed to nickel and dime'ing is why the Pats are competitive every year.

Reports now are saying he's visiting the Steelers which is intriguing as they barely have any cap space but obviously a solid team.

I do think we should tie up both Butler and Hightower but to be fair to the Pats both Butler and Hightower are struggling to get what they want elsewhere also. The market as Hazy says is against them. The Patriots have built their success on "nickel and diming" so why throw money at players just because they asked for it.

No one wants to trade for Butler because of the Tender and no one wants to give Hightower what he thinks he deserves. So the ball sadly is the in the Patriots court on both of them. Its not about being petty its business.

Looks like Butler is off. He's visiting NO on Thursday according to Sean Payton.

This means one of 2 things.

    (1) They're prepared to submit an offer sheet and give up the 11th pick of the draft. Which is very unlikely.

    Or, more feasibly...

    (2) There was a gentleman's agreement as part of the Cooks trade that we'd get a contract sorted with Butler, and the trade him to the Saints for the 32nd overall pick back again (and maybe some lower picks being moved over). That would basically mean it was a Butler for Cooks trade, with some lower picks moved around as part of it.

Hightower is also currently in Pittsburgh discussing a deal. Hopefully it's not what he's looking for.

Or the Saints make an offer that isn't as high as Butler would like, and the Pats match it.
I just don't want to lose Butler. For me, he is a known commodity that is worth paying to keep.

Hightower left Pittsburgh without a deal

Edit: Seems like the Steelers told Hightower to decide or deal is off the table. Good thing for them no flights back to Boston until tomorrow.
The Steelers do not want to be used by Dont’a Hightower.

According to NFL Media’s Aditi Kinkabwala, the Steelers have told Hightower their offer is gone if he gets on the plane to leave town. He’s reportedly left their facility after a visit on Tuesday.

The Steelers likely know Hightower was going to take their offer to the Patriots so they could see what he was getting and then the team would base their offer off that.

The linebacker reportedly is seeking $10-13 million per season.

It was also reported Monday that many teams around the league believe Hightower will eventually re-sign with the Patriots.

Is Hightower over-rated by us? I only say that cause I really thought he'd be snapped up in free agency. Is it the health concerns (he did either seem to miss a number of games or play injured)?

According to the Jets beat today they gave him a significant offer, but he wanted to bring it back to New England to see if they could match it. But as I said that came from the Jets beat, so theres a good chance its complete bo11ocks

I get the feeling seen as the same type of report came out of Pittsburgh that he is using these teams to try stay in New England and get them to pay him more. If he wanted to go and got better offers elsewhere why not go?

I think he over rates himself to be honest. The market is not there for what he wants.

Apparently he was pretty good for the Bengals towards the end of last season.

He's shown promise as a RB but he's been largely a special teams player...he could be a direct replacement for Brandon Bolden...it'll be interesting to see how much we paid him

    4 years, $43.5M, $19M guaranteed.

    Welcome home Boom :D

Such good value, glad to have him back

The Patriots knew the market so well. They refused to franchise him which would have set his value at $15m and a lot of people thought they were being mad and/or stingy. Yes, he only really plays on 2 downs and has injury concerns but getting a defensive leader and playmaker who is only entering his prime for $11m a year when he hit true free agency is great value.

If we keep Butler and resign Blount, this off-season would be perfect, not only did we not lose any significant players but we grew way stronger which is scary.

Butler will get a deal and Blount will stay and Jimmy will be traded to the Browns for a ton of picks

That's serious value, particularly on the guaranteed money.

Keeping Butler would be huge. Really creates an expected strong secondary.

Blount, I'm not bothered about. If we keep him, ok. If he goes, ok.

I do think we needed to get stronger (going back to my point about a tougher schedule this year) to give ourselves another good shot at the SB.

Last off-season was a breeze as we basically had nobody hitting free agency so we kept the same team that went to the AFC Championship and we just added a couple of low cost veterans like Hogan, Bennett and Long, it was a perfect scenario. The biggest name we lost last season was Akiem Hicks, a player we picked up mid-season who was a decent contributor.

This off-season is going to be tough. We have a ton of players hitting free agency and no way we keep even half of them. I'm still team "In Bill We Trust" so i see the off season going like this: we lose half of our free agents, replacing them with 2nd and 3rd day free agents and then Bill will trade out of the 1st round, gather a ton of picks and fill the roster with a lot of Rutgers players. Its not going to be fun to watch but it generally works out in the end so we'll be one of the best teams in the league again next year and for years to come.

I'm delighted to be shocked by BB's off season antics and proven wrong.

    img_20170315_140751-jpg.16596

    Burkhead >>> Boldin
    Ealy & Guy >>> Long & Sheard
Cooks >>> losing nobody basically icing on the cake
Allen < worse than Bennett but cheaper and younger
    Gilmore = Butler

CB2 is up in the air at the moment. If we manage to keep Butler then:
    Gilmore & Butler >>> Butler & Ryan

The last domino is Blount. We have no big back at the moment so I hope we resign him. Somehow Eddie Lacy managed to get $5m/1yr deal which Blount is definitely better than Lacy but i can't see BB matching that. Blount has had no visits so far this off-season so again that is encouraging, they longer that goes on the more likely he'll take a hometown discount to stay.

    Conflicting reports on Butler:

Also reading a few other sources potential deal with Saints is a low one meaning if true Butler made his mind up to get out of New England.

I'd say Butler will stay. It doesn't make sense for the Saints to trade a number 11 pick for a 27 year old CB. They're not in a Win Now situation. Much better off drafting a younger, cheaper CB with the 11 pick.

Maybe they're just grooming him for next season!

I don't think the 11 pick has ever been in play.

They'll likely send back the 32 pick so that it was a Cooks for Butler trade all along. I imagine there was an agreement in place, the Pats and Saints have a very good working relationship.

This whole Butler saga is stretching on far too long. Butler and his Agent and the Patriots need to find a deal that works for both. I can't believe that we can't get a deal done with him. The Patriots are better with him than without him especially with Gilmore there now. How is it not in our best interests to get a deal done. The more I think about it we can't even use the Patriot Way to defend the decision because we just went out and threw money at Gilmore to join more than what Butler wants. We have already made that aggressive move. Patriots and Butler Camp get a deal done and lets get Bowl 6 and do what you want after that. So frustrating.

And isn't there still plenty of cap space to sign him (even before the Amendola contract is looked at)?

Read today that we actually still have 26 million, and that's including the 3.9m figure on Butler's tender.

Talk of Revis resigning with us. He's getting paid $6m by the Jets this season regardless of what happens contract wise.

Imagine he comes back to the Pats after the Jets paid him that massive contract, wins another Super Bowl with your arch rivals and you paid his salary too...the Jets would have to just quit the NFL and join the CFL or something

He was bloody awful last year. It'd need to be a low salary, incentive driven contract, for us to look at him.
