Ok, just got a letter from the hire company, an administration fee for passing my details on to police as I got a speeding ticket while in England two weeks ago. I have an Irish license.
    Anyone know whats the deal?
    Will I get points?
What happens if I choose not to pay?
    Thanks

You won't currently get points. If you don't pay the hire company will attempt to get the money from you as you have agreed to be liable to such fines when you signed the rental agreement, not sure if this will mean a rebill through your credit card or chase you with bad debt handler.

You won't get points but if you refuse to pay then most likely the hire company will take it off your credit card along with maybe another admin fee for doing it.

Pay it, the hire company will likely charge whatever card you gave them at time of hire. You could cancel that card to prevent such a thing happening but what happens after that I don't know. I would assume if said company is global it might be trivial for them to come after you in Ireland. They know where you live after all...

They'll just blacklist your licence on their system. I know a few people, mainly related to the exotic rallies in the US, who can't hire from Hertz or Budget any more.

So I phoned the hire company who said it is nothing to do with them anymore, all they do is pass on details. And they do not know what will happen if I don't pay.
Guess I will wait to see what comes in post.

Well if I knew there were no repercussions I would rather spend that money somewhere else, maybe a local business?
Yes I should have thought of that before I went 36 in a 30 zone.

If you intend returning to the UK, pay it,

If you don't pay the fine it goes to court.
If you don't go to court they will issue an arrest warrant for you.

they'll pass on your details to the police, and it's up to them to chase you for it then.

i had a similar fine for overstaying in a car park a few years ago, go to the airport well ahead of time, so decided to take a nap in maccy d's car park before giving the car back. rental company took the admin fee off me, but that was as far as it went.

They won't go to court. They have pre-authorisation against your credit card. Probably £1,200 sterling. They will lift the money from that and charge oyu more admin. If you close the card, they still can put the charge through, just like if you buy something the morning that you close your card. Closing it does not absolve you of responsibility.

And if you are non resident, that warrant will be cancelled after 12 or 18 months,.

A European arrest warrant won't be issued for such a minor offence.

And this time next year they won't even be in the EU.

    Drive on....

Warrants never expire. If the OP does not pay they will be arrested next time they fly to the UK.

They are stopping people going on holiday for unpaid fines now also.

Don't listen to the liars who say you will get arrested. Yes you didn't pay a ticket for a CAR PARK, Jesus if they see you then you are done buddy. Armed response will be called and then you will be arrested and brought to high court in front of panel of 20 judges who will demand that you explain yourself. I don't know if posters have nothing better to do with their lives than to scare monger people for absolutely no reason.
In short don't pat, nothing will happen, get a new card and they will not be able to withdraw the money if they decide to get smart.

Warrants are regularly cancelled when the suspect offender has no expectation of returning to the relevant state.

Car hire company will not charge your card as no fine has been attached to the car unlike parking and tolls.

Uk police will not pursue it any further - similarly gardai don't pursue British cars.

It does all change in May though and points and fines will be interchangeable between UK and Ireland from then.

You don't think they will even send out the fine to me?

happened me last year. pay the admin fee from the car hire company. I paid it and never got a speeding fine , or heard anymore. I have driven and hired cars in the uk since with no problem. its up to them to send the speeding ticket to the irish address which they usually don't bother doing

That's already paid, came off my card.
Hopefully I'll have the same outcome as you.
    Thank you

You could always tell the hire company you wish to contest the speeding offence in court, ie plead not guilty. That is what I probably would do.

It is up to the UK authorities to then summons you to appear in court and prove their case.

They cannot serve a summons on you in Ireland, the same as the Gardai cannot serve a summons on a person in the UK.

No warrant will be issued for your arrest, for a warrant to be issued you first have to be summonsed or charged to appear in court (and then not show up)

Eh.. Please go back and read the OP. Its a SPEEDING ticket not a parking ticket they are on about.

Its even in the thread title ffs!

Speeding tickets will get you hauled before the courts.

I know personally of someone living here that got caught speeding in Scotland. He did not pay the fine and got a letter telling him to pay the fine online or appear at xxx court on xxx date otherwise a warrant would be issued for his arrest.

Now as others have said, if the OP has no intention of ever going back to the UK, then no problem.

You got a source for this? I can see it taking a back seat with all the Brexit talk.

It has nothing to do with the EU.
It's main aim is to deal with cross border antics and is a local agreement between governments.

Yes why would you support a government which conquered Ireland and caused misery all over.

Eventually some do, but it is extremely rare for prosecution of someone out of state.

If the speed was excessively above the limits, they possibly would consider it, but extremely doubtful.

As for the Scotland story, how come its always "a friend" and never first hand direct information. FAKE NEWS.

I never said it had anything to do with the EU. I was merely saying Brexit negotiations and talks would probably take prescient. Also, given all the upheaval in the north, it wouldn't surprise me if a revision was needed. Furthermore, considering we don't have a joined up system for tax, NCT and penalty points, I really doubt such legislation would even do much good considering it would be un-comparable with the UK.

Like I said, anyone have a link for such an agreement?
