Petrol towcar - not many options

Hi All,

I've been driving diesels for the past 7 or 8 years, mainly because I haven't been able to get a suitable petrol car. Don't do the mileage to justify a diesel but for the summer months we have a large touring caravan so need something with a bit of power with capacity of towing about 1600kg. Have been driving a Citroen C-Crosser for the past 5.5 years but looking for a change. I've been searching Carsireland & Carzone for the past while with a filter to look for petrol cars between 1.8l & 2.5l & price less than 15K. Not too many options. Not really looking for a gas guzzler either. Any ideas?. It may have to be a diesel again but really only need it for 3 months of the year.

Thanks for the replies. Some nice Volvos there. Re the Lexus I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't tow with a GS450H. Not sure if it's the same for Rx450h. Probably sacrilege to put a towbar on a Gs450h. Anyone know if issues towing win a hybrid.

AFAIK anything with a CVT gearbox cannot be used to tow?

Some CVT's can be used to tow.

Including the GS450h @ 2,000kg.

Worth pointing out that the 2.0 petrol in that generation V70 is a non turbo four cylinder unit, essentially the same unit that's used in a Mk4 Ford Mondeo, so it would be quicker for the OP to push the caravan himself than in that car. It will absolutely guzzle fuel because it has such little power and no low down torque.

The 2.5T is a vastly superior choice for the OP's needs, and won't use any more fuel in the real world (especially when towing).

How new are you looking? Something like an e60 5 series... 525i would seem ideal to me.. but you will not find one newer than 07 I guess.
