Bangkok to Koh Samui Travel options

I have been rather surprised by the jump in flight prices between Bangkok and Koh Samui since the last time I visited. It's circa €530 for two people now (€265/person) for little more than an hours flight.
It seems that owning an airport really pays off!

I've heard some suggestions of flying to Surat Thani instead and arranging a transfer and ferry from there.

Has anyone done this recently who can provide some tips and idea of costs please.

In the end the extra (approx) €120 difference per person may be worth it just for peace of mind and comfort BUT i just HAVE to research it first anyway !

Fly to Surat Thani with Airasia, make sure your flight is due to land before 4 but preferably before 3 depending on costs. I did it a few times and I think it was 600 baht for bus and boat to Samui, bus takes around an hour and boat between 1 to 2 hours. It's a really easy trip, there are tonnes of minivans meeting every flight or alternatively you can actually buy tickets on the plane from Airasia or online when booking. Just be sure you get in early afternoon as the last boat I think is 6 or so. I think the flight was about 20 euro if you book well in advance and it's not around full moon period.

Just as a side note, airasia fly from Don Mueang and not Suravbhami, so if your flying in and going straight to Samui make sure it's the right airport
