I was just wondering when you watch the All Ireland finals from the 50's and 60's why did the players bend the knee and kiss the ring of the bishop or archbishop before the match?

I wonder did anyone refuse on national tv?

They probably weren't aware of what was going on in Tuam at the time.

The funniest part was when they used to get the bishop to throw the ball in for the football final and they'd always seem to make a complete hames of it and just fling as hard as they could rather than throw it up fairly between both teams.

It's all very homoerotic. He might as well be kneeling down to suck him off in thst photo. Like the images of the ancient athletes on Grecian ceramic art.

Can't imagine the GAA stars of today doing that

There surly wud be insurance risks when they had the Bishop throwing in the ball, more liable to get an elbow lol

I remember years ago in my hometown, the bishop went from player to player and had his ring kissed. As one of the lads stooped down to kiss the ring, he farted and then a massive glob of sh!t popped out and ran down his leg.

I remember the look of disgust on the bishop's face, a handkerchief to his mouth as the village priest whisked him away apologising.

We ended up losing the match.

Back then, everybody kissed a bishop's ring when greeting them. It was seen as a sign of reverence for his office as successor to the apostles. Much as ambassadors kiss the hand of a monarch like Queen Elizabeth.

In ancient Ireland it was customary to lick the kings nipple to pay homage to him. In one of the bog bodies found the man had his nipple cut off.

    WTF !?!?!?!?!

When the hell did this stop ? I dont follow GAA that closely but trusted that they correct reverence would be shown to bishops. OP, are you trolling (good one if so, even if a little to incredible - though a lot of people seem to have fallen for it) ?
If not, this is incredible and something should be done urgently to sort it out. boards.ie petition ?

That's why the GAA will always be a foreign sport to me. I cannot relate to it and its hard wired link with Catholic Ireland. Sport should be for all without any barrier to race, nationality or religion.

The GAA doesn't stop anyone from playing whatever their backround.

    Are you an Orangeman?

    What are you on about?

No idea about years ago but what club in Ireland or the world currently discriminates on any of the basis you've mentioned there?

You probably shouldn't follow any sport then if that's the case. Unfortunately, religion seems to get tangled up in a lot of them.

I never encountered any religion playing rugby or football.

I know there was a guy with us who kicked with the left foot, but I don't know what religion he was.
