So we left it a bit late to book a week away at the end of may and prices are too extravagant for our budget. I've never booked a last minute holiday and I'm just wondering are they worth waiting on? We're looking for a family destination for 2 adults and 2 smallies.

It can vary, you need to have a good general idea of places where you would be ok going first so you can quickly jump on last minute deals if they become available, maybe have 10 resorts researched that you know you would be happy with. If it was me I would look for cheap flights somewhere and book the hotel around it rather than look for a cheap package.

have you considered a combination of (Ryanair) flights and AirBnB - you can save a lot of hassle by cooking in house on holidays - if your kids are young or picky eaters - and some of the AirBnB houses or villas you can rent are fantastic - often homeowners can loan buggies or have toys in situ which can make it a bit easier than entering a holiday villa.
