Does anyone know after a minor service at the main dealers do they generally wash the car? Mines is going in tomorrow and I'm unsure if they would wash it. I'd obviously prefer them not to as I assume they have some sort of horrible drive through thing they use?!

They generally do wash them, but I leave strict instructions with them and also get it printed on the job car to not wash it.

BMW dealers wash the car, i ask em to hoover and alloys clean only (Was out of BH at the time :)

I always talk to the service advisor about the coatings I have on the car and how much they cost so it helps stick in their head to not touch the car when it comes to washing. It also helps that I get that kind of thing done in Athlone and live in Tipp so them washing it would be a waste of everyones time.

Anywhere to rent a DA machine polisher in Dublin?

I want to have a go of one but don't want to fork out on one just yet in case I am not very good with it.

I have Meg Ultimate compound, polish and some bilt hamber double speed wax ready to go.

Any advice on the pads to use would be great also, thanks

BMW normally do wash it but I just ask them not to wash it. I've seen the guy washing them with a brush that nearly looks like a yard brush  not a chance they are putting that near the car.

    Yeah, Detailing Shed rent them.

A finishing pad and a medium cut pad will do a nice job for your first outing.

Ye might know, recently had some respraying done on the car, how long exactly are you supposed to leave it before you polish it?

Few weeks to a month .

    Polishing will be fine
Protecting it is different - needs time to outgas - speak to your painter - but 30 days if you dont get an answer

Will you be re-stocking in the interim? Looking to get some BH stuff.

The plan was to try keep stock low to make for an easier move, but with the uncertainty we've had to scrap that plan as stocks are very low now!
BH has been ordered and should be in within the next day or two!

So after a bit of a scare recently I pulled the trigger on this: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/262742019355

It arrived today and I'm happy out with it.

The readings on the steel are bang on so far but the aluminium are a little off!

However that being said I don't think you'll find a car with more than 200 microns of primer paint and clear so the factor that it's out by isn't a whole lot.

I've messed around with it on 2 cars one of which has been repaired and it's reading went sky high over the repaired area as you would expect.

Ultimately I think if you are considering taking a machine to paint you care about, its worth while for €125 all in.

You can see in the photos the case it comes in and the readings themselves on both ferrous and non ferrous which the gauge detects itself.

    Hey Curran
Looking at a snow foam lance,
Just wondering do you have a connection for the power washer above?

Lads! I'm struggling with the proper use of tar remover. It's an Autoglym one, just won't dissolve anything. Is it meant to be sprayed on while the bodywork is dry? I guess the same applies to quick detailer as the water dilutes the solutions. Thank you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,920 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

AutoGlym & Turtle Wax tar remover < fresh dairy cream.

If you want a proper tar remover, get CarPro TarX or Gtechniq Tar remover.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

A good tar remover will still work on a damp surface...obviously a soaked surface will dilute it and reduce the effectiveness.

Water will also dilute a quick detailer, but some people like to use a QD as a drying aid. Very much depends in the QD product, as some are just for light dust, finger smudge removal, type products, others are gloss enhancement, others have protection in them, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Probably a stoopid question, but im assuming tar remover removes everything else too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

Everything else too? You mean a wax or sealant?

Yes, it will have an adverse effect on traditional waxes and sealants...will it fully remove it? If the wax/sealant is fresh, unlikely if it is a quality product. Will it drastically reduce durability, yes. Will it take away beading, yes.

However, nano/ceramic coatings are very resistant and they can handle this better. Not ideal to regular applications. Though sometimes is beneficial to decontaminate the coating to help revive it.

As mentioning the cream: after the first use, there was a white, creamy substance on the rag, I thought it's down to the hair oil spray bottle which I got from the other half. And I couldn't figure it why there's no reaction in the bottle, why the remover not turning into mush. I've got the answer now! :)

I use to use the ag stuff but as you see you would need to get a brillo pad to help remove the tar.

Get the stuff mentioned above spray over affected areas and watch the tar run.

Do not rub as there is where damage is done.
