Why is spring considered a bad time for A/I

    Just speaking to my Ai man and he said that AI IS rarely used for spring calving just wondering why this is ?? . Thanks lads

    Sucklers I'm assuming? Possibly due to part time nature and perceived/ possible difficulties in picking up heats? Handling facilities in terms of bringing them in and out of the field etc need to be good. Would not be true for dairy or perhaps fulltime sucklers maybe

    Your AI man was probably talking about lads that have a bull but might use AI for a few for replacements or on his daughters.

    If you only use AI then time of year makes no difference. There is no reason other than the hassle of bringing in a cow.

    During winter it's easier draft cows from a shed. In spring once they go out its stock bull all the way here.

    For dairying or any sort of compact calving system, the biggest problem with a stock bull is he'll start missing cows if there are more than say 5 in heat per day, so you end up needed several bulls for only say 6wks of the year, and of course every other dairyfarmer in the country would need them for the same few weeks! This is where AI is utterly invaluable.
