You need to add any non steam games to steam before you can use the steam controller. If the game is popular enough, there will be a community made mapping.

I really dislike the Steam controller. I was hoping it would be great but I was so disappointed with it. Luckily a friend brought it over so I could try it first before buying it.

I don;'t think you can get to grips with the controller without using it for ages, then it's quite a bit better than other controllers for me. At the start i found it hard with the button sizing, the mousepad thing etc. You can see here how well you can use it for accuracy:

The Xbox one controller looks great, only hear good things about it. Roughly €100 when you add the plug and charge kit and bluetooth dongle though.

Id like to try the steam controller but id be hesitant to buy one without trying one. Having used a 360 pad im sure id adapt the the one pad quick enough so even though its much more expensive i reckon it would be a better fit for me. Dont use a controller much on PC anymore anyway,be nice to have a good one for when i do though

The new controllers have Bluetooth built in. And you can play it using USB phone cable plugged in or just get some rechargable AAs. About €50 all in, not 100.

I have to say i've stopped using the Steam controller as well. It's not a bad controller, it just doesn't feel right for me. When i used it for a few days in a row, i was getting the hang of it, but when i went back to the old Xbox One pad, it just felt so much smoother.

Currently using the PS4 pad though, as it's probably my favourite of the lot.

What if your PC does not have bluetooth? Who in 2017 wants a wired controller? Also batteries?? Really?

I stand by my €100 quote,if you want a wireless XB1 controller that doesnt run on AA's thats about what it costs

I had serious issues with an Xb1 controller, it just refused to work as plug and play on 2 W10 machines.

Gave it away its someone elses problem now and I have my wired 360 out again.

I'm not a console gamer and I only ever really used a controller for GTA Red Dead Redemption etc. When you consider the steam controller was designed to lure PC gamers to play PC games from the coach using steam link then it has to be said it's a massive failure in that regards

What if your PC has no USB port :pac:

Xbox One controller with Bluetooth support - €55

And if you want a battery that holds a great charge I suggest the
Xbox One Play & Charge Kit. €20.00

    Total: €75

    Not €100.

Also most people I know have rechargeable AA batteries so they might not even want a play and charge kit.

I'll never understand people complaining about batteries in controllers. I think its great that you can swap batteries out and not have to deal with a product that uses in-built batteries that lose their charge eventually over time.

You forgot the wireless adapter, which is €25 most places so yeah,€100. Most custom gaming PC's are not gonna have bluetooth, your commemt abou USB is just plain idiotic. Most PC's come with USB,not a lot come with bluetooth.

Laptops seem to be about the only time i see bluetooth, unless its some pre built dell or the like. Ive found them to have bluetooth but thats about it.

I also just chrage controllers with a phone charger when im not using them. Saves the hassle of tethering it to the PC

I don't have bluetooth on my custom rig which I built 5 years ago because, well, I didn't need it :)

Anyway €100 for the controller with a bluetooth adapter/dongle is quite a lot, so I'll stick with my Xbox 360 controller for now (until the 2nd wireless dongle dies that is)

I have built 2 gaming PCs in the past 3 years and I have put bluetooth into both builds. Why wouldn't someone add it. Its dirt cheap. You can even buy USB bluetooth adapters for under €10 so come off your high horse with this €100 nonsense.

At bare minimum people can buy a Xbox One controller for 55 and a bluetooth adapter for under €10.

The controller is 55 in Argos and a bluetooth USB adapter is under €10 on amazon.

I use the Xbox One controller (V2) with my gaming PC.

Ok,as the bare minimum someone could do that. What i said was that the controller, plug and play kit and the dongle was €100,and this allowed you to have a wireless controller without batteries, was i wrong?

For €65 you dont get that.

I use a usb cable to connect my Xbox One controller to both my PC and my Xbox One. I sit right beside my computer and console so it has never been much of a problem.

Try again,i said the MS dongle was about €25,which makes it near an even €100. If your happy to use a 3rd party dongle go ahead. Also a 3rd party battery pack.Again correct me if im wrong.

When i play using the PC on the TV in the living room i use the controller, with a wired one sitting back on the couch and playing isnt really an option unless i want a huge snaking usb cable snakimg accross the floor.

cool thanks, so no lag going for a usb Bluetooth over a card?

I play wirelessly on my bedroom TV from the pc in the next room, so no nasty wires for me ;)

The usb cable wire doesn't bother me what bothers me more is the headphone cable coming from my PC. I nearly always get tangled up in it. Never happened once with usb cable going into my controller.

Let us know how you get on with the bluetooth dongle, I've heard there are some latency problems if you don't use the official dongle.

    Your post is the following...

You didn't mention any official Microsoft products except for the controller.

Also the Xbox dongle for windows is not a bluetooth dongle. Its some proprietary wireless tech which is why the Xbox One (ver 1) controller can work even though it has no bluetooth capabilities.

The official wireless adapter is massive when hooked into a USB port. I'd recommend a low profile USB bluetooth dongle to work with an Xbox version 2 controller.

Here is a video showing a comparison between the Xbox wireless adapter for windows and a regular bluetooth dongle. Its a very simple video and just tests the range. Not latency. In my case I use the controller a few feet from my desk.

Are the really cheap bluetooth dongles trustworthy though? I find with those bargain basement dongles, be they bluetooth or wifi, the can be problematic.

Also, the Venom battery packs are horrible. I've a set on my Xbox One controllers and the battery life is terrible, sometimes I end up having to plug the controller in.

I'd be inclined to pony up for better quality products, it's a once once investment really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,615 ✭✭✭Revoker88

Well after all the talk about the XBO controller i decided to pony up for one. Ive wanted one awhile but *ahem* the price of the official kit had put me off *ahem*.

Ive heard nothing but good things about the controller anyway so while if feel it was expensive im sure ill get use out of it over the years. Possibly be grabbing Scorpio in the fall so can use it on that too if nessacery.

Also ive had my eye on a Logitech G29 for awhile so decided to drop into power city on the way home from work. Online its down as €209 and the same in store. What it doesnt note is that there is a current offer where you get the wheel and peddles for €200 with the shifter as an added bonus,so €10 cheaper than marked price amd they throw in the shifter. They couldnt tell me when this deal expire. Also im only sure it applies to the G29,it may not apply to the G920.
Great price for the whole lot imo, doesnt work out ill sell it in a few months for not much of a loss.

So tempted to get the Switch. The reviews of Zelda are really something, and it would probably get more use than the PS4 at the moment. Nothing coming out on that that interests me (not that Last Guardian and Uncharted 4 are gone).

At least people with a Wii U will still be able to play Zelda.

That's the other option i guess. Get a cheap WiiU and play it there.
