    And Coben.
And yesterday in the NCT centre a woman shouted "Lloyd!" at her two year old.
    LLOYD!!!!

Lloyd is a cool name, remember the ghostly barman from The Shining?Personally I don't know anyone called Lloyd, but I used to frequent two pubs called Lloyd's a couple of years ago, about a minutes walk from each other on Amiens St.Two dirty kips, just like the other taverns I normally gravitate toward.

A friend of a friend has just posted a pic of her new baby on Facebook.
    Eire Harper

I'm ashamed to say I kind of like this :o
There are a lot of names I really like but would know better than to subject my own child to them. I have to spell my own name constantly because my parents decided it would be cool to spell it differently to the usual way. So I have been through the struggle!

My name is spelt differently to the name has become a little more common since I've been born!
    I love it!
I can't stand meeting or working with anyone who's name is even slightly like mine.
    Unique names all the way!!

I'm happy you're happy, it's the bane of my existence tbh. An ex thought I just changed the spelling to be unique and different, I was horrified that he'd think I chose this life lol

What I don't get is do you go through life having to say, "with a C..." Or whatever. Like to spell Mark as Marc. So if you are on the phone and give your name you have to say, "Marc with a C..." So I would be MarcWithaC Kelly? :)

Yup, I go through life saying my name, then spelling it automatically afterwards.
I love it, I love that I don't know anyone with the same name as me!
And when I do meet someone with a kinda similar sounding name, it's just weird to me.

I have a really unusual name, an Irish one that even Gaelgoirs have trouble with. Starbucks cashiers don't even try with me! I usually just tell them to write it as pronounced so that the baristas aren't confused as well but I have been asked to just write my name myself before! One of my middle names is in another language too so I like to have fun with that sometimes!

You need to find a girlfriend or take up the golf bub. Then again, some folks are far more easily amused than others.I don't dispute the fact that taking pics of your Starbucks cups is funny,if I spotted some eccentric sort taking pictures of their coffee I'd certainly have a bit of a chuckle if I'm honest

What's wrong with taking pics of my Starbucks coffee with a mad name on it?
    It's not like I'm complaining! I think it's funny

I have to do the phone spelling all the time, with both names. Its frustrating when they don't get it even you c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y to spell it out... twice.

    If only phonetics weren't involved.

And then you never get the email you spelt out to them and you phone them only for them to say yep I sent it to i-n-c-o-r-r-e-c-t-spelling@email. Nope that's not the spelling I gave you. Three times!

I have an uncommon first name that almost always needs spelling, and my surname has a different spelling than usual so when asked my name I have to say my first name and spell it, then say my second name and say it has x instead of y. I am so used to it now but as a kid I hated both my names being slightly awkward.

X instead of Y, that is unusual :)

I tried to solve this problem by not caring how people spell my name.

This works up to a point. If people don't ask how I spell it, and then use a spelling which is not the one I use, that's not a problem. But if people ask how they should spell it, and I say "I really don't mind how you spell it" or words to that effect, for some reason they find that very hard to accept.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,512 ✭✭✭✭Peregrinus

I would find that difficult, as I.like to get things right! It depends on the circumstance when spelling your name too. I don't care how Starbucks etc. attempts to spell my name but emails, reservations, appointments etc. are fairly important to get right.
It matters in an e-mail address because computers are fairly dim but, to be honest, it's rarely important in other contexts. Really, what does it matter if somebody's appointment diary shows "Tim Green" instead of "Tim Greene" to see Dr. Bloggs at 8:30? When Tim Greene shows up, he'll be seen.

Trivial fact of the day: we have six surviving signatures by William Shakespeare. He uses five different spellings of his own name (and none of them are the spelling that we use). It's not a problem unless you decide it's a problem.

Ok a girl I know called her son Ferdia, I know it's Irish but my god it sounds like a foot disease, I also heard a recent one 'Jaxon' that will be nice at school "Jaxon Murphy"

*I changed the surname but it's not far off

Jaxon with the X is dreadful. It reminds me of growing up and our da might ask, "Did you leave the light in the jax on?"
