Best car for young driver, on small budget.( Yaris/Aygo)

Details:

I'm 23
Full licence since 7-15
Named insured driving since 5-16
€3,500 to spend
Need car for low mileage driving (<16,000 km/annum)
Want something reliable, preferably Japanese

Quoted Liberty for €1900 with years named driver experience, on '00 Yaris, but car was only €300 on donedeal and the father said it wouldn't be worth buying.

Looked at Aygo's , but haven't heard much about reliability. Anyone know something cheap, bulletproof, to survive emissions testing on NCT for a year or two?

Insurance companies don't like cars over 15 years old or so, they deem them unsafe so load the premiums. Try and stick to something around the 10 year old mark to see you through the couple of years.

Have a look at the Daihatsu Sirion, shares most stuff with the Toyota Yaris so should be just as reliable:

Peugeot 206. A very underrated car. Reliable engine, great fuel economy and cheaper to buy than similar type Japanese cars.
