Varnishing over creosoted garage door

I have 30 year old wooden garage double doors which have been creosoted several times over the years. The creosote was weathered into different shades and now I want to sand back and apply a good quality varnish. Well sanding back will be exposing you to serious toxicity: you may need to rethink the project
