It was a teenage dishco, and the old folks wished them well
"C'est la vie", say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell

But such views don't seem enlightened at all - they just seem to come from another place of repression: the fear of looking like a prude (as if there's only prude and libertine and nothing in between). And with all the accompanying insults towards people who don't agree with certainly don't seem openminded.

I think this is spot on. I was not overly serious in comments about out of fashion dresses but I am serious when I say that the attitude described above is very much dated. It seems more at home in eighties/nineties. Smart is sexy today, sporty is sexy today, healthy is sexy today, individuality is sexy today, push up bars aren't really sexy today. Not everything is perfect but no matter how some wish nineties where Cindy Crawford had four showers in one movie (and it had nothing to do with story) aren't coming back anytime soon. While there is some nonsense around women are finally getting recognition for more that just being eye candy. And there is nothing wrong with teaching young girls that they don't need to put all their attributions on show to prove their worth.

There is nothing wrong with being sexy but the most sexy women don't necessarily wear the shortest skirt.

I agree, alcohol can be bad but what does alcohol have to do with a dress code?

It's hard enough to keep those slippery dresses from riding up over your hips to expose your thong when your sober, but when you've drank a nagging of Jaegermeister it's nigh on mission impossible

I think you mean Kylie. I gave myself a slap on the wrist for even knowing that :pac:

Kylie and Kendall are relatively sober and sensible in comparison to the older 3, of whom Khloe is by far the boldest.
I know. It rots my brain to know their names.

50 years of feminism and this is where we are.

I blame her for the duck face selfies. Although they're not as bad as the ones where they open their jaw as far as it will hinge back, practically showing their tonsils in a completely faked expression of excitement because we're #having-super-fun-with-the-girlies!!!!

I march to the beat of my own drum, unlike a lot of the judgemental fashion critics in this thread. There's an irony there somewhere.
Your posts are some of the most judgemental on the thread.

    Indeed. I'm judging the judges.

You should see some of the lengths of the shorts on female GAA players nowadays too! Maybe a ban on shorts and a return to skirts is in order! I mean, surely they must be cold? And they might have sex with male spectators?

One thing is wearing functional dress for whatever sport you are doing be it shorts for GAA players or swimsuits in the pool. Another thing is sexualising your appearance by wearing provocative and overly revealing clothes in order to attract attention to your body when you're 14 or 15 years old. But you know all of this.

This poster just keeps acknowledging the easy target posts and ignores the ones that aren't as convenient, and then throws out a sneer. Not great discussion tactics.

I've had to supervise many teenage discos over the last few years, and I attended many a few years ago. I wore short skirts and F**k me boots and revealing tops and survived. However, I was a confident teen with a slim figure so I was happy to show it off. It looks horrific in the photos now though!!
I have seen some girls at the recent ones dressed the same as their slim friends and they are obviously so uncomfortable in the clothes but feel peer pressure to wear what is in fashion. There was one girl whose skirt was so low cut I could see the top of her arse, and so high that I could see the bottom.
I think that this is a great move. It takes the decision out of the children's hands, and means that they can wear a nice skirt and top and high heels and still feel glamourous and fancy, but just not at the ridiculously revealing end.

Remember, 15 year olds are children and need to be taught that this is a ball, not a disco, and they need to dress appropriately!

    Ah the teenage disco.

Where 15 year old girls dress like prostitutes then proceed to act like prostitutes.

I really don't think it matters what a girl wears, unless for security reasons someone for example can't wear a hat or a hoodie, I don't see why anyone cares.

Suppressing individuality is never a good idea, particularly with teenagers, they will have the rest of their lives to be "modest" if they wish.

They're not suppressing individuality - there's a huge amount of choices still allowed, including above the knee skirts. They're not standing at the door pinning newspaper to the end of people's skirts.

On another note I own a dress pretty much the same as the one on the far left and feel quite classy when I wear it, I'm in my twenties. I find their "keep it neat and discreet" a bit offensive. The dresses they have shown are actually quite modest in comparison to what I was expecting, that's the style at the minute and what you would probably see on a standard night out.

You're an adult. You're allowed drive, vote, get married, have a credit card, all sorts of things. And you already know that your dress is appropriate in some places and not others. I'm sure you don't wear it to the office. Teenagers don't always know what's appropriate, so the venue has made it easy for them by outlining what's acceptable there. Lots of places have dress codes (restaurants, for example), it's not a big deal.

.. and if you dress like prostitutes then you must expect to be treated like prostitutes.

Do these girls not realise that it is the MEN who are leering and letching at them? Is that really what they want?

It's not that simple, as you're making a lot of assumptions there: firstly that they are sexualising their appearance (they may not feel the same way). Secondly that the clothes are provocative or overly revealing (that's entirely subjective). And thirdly, that they are doing it to attract attention (they may be doing it for other reasons).

So I don't know all of this actually, and neither do you, but the difference is I'm not near as certain about this as you and a lot of other posters here seem to be.

The teenage discos in this town have recently been the subject of a very well attended public meeting in this rural town where they'd hardly leave the house of an evening for anything including a nuclear attack.
The amount of children lying in the street in pools of vomit has reached crisis point
And of course every parent wants someone else to be responsible
    The school (?!?)
    The AGS
    The Town Council
    The Hotel
Society at large (seriously. One mother decided that any adult who didn't want to risk being labelled a paedophile by picking their subconscious scantily clad daughter up off the pavement should be arrrested and fined.)
Just not the actual guardians of the kids.

From the very top to the very bottom of our society and culture it's pretty clear that personal responsibility is an alien concept in this country. When things go wrong it's either everybody elses fault or nobody's.

Nobody's telling anybody how to dress, only how they are permitted to dress or behave when in attendance at this private function.
If anybody has a problem with the dress code they can simply choose not to attend.

It's what the media/role models/their friends are telling them what they should look and act like.

A lot of modern R n B and female pop music artists dress like low class prostitutes.

I disagree. Kylie is only 19 and has had more facial reconstruction and fillers than Michael Jackson. She is to blame for the current inflated lip trend. I don't think people are that bothered about Khloe tbh.

Madonna wasn't exactly restrained in her dress choices when I was a teen. In fact there was probably more revealing clothing among celebrities then than it is today.

It's too easy to blame celebrities for everything. Today's sexy dresses are cheap and easy to buy without parents even knowing. There will be also some parents that won't give a damn but their aspirations for their kids might not be that high anyway.

A bit of reverse psychology works,(1) banning something always make it seem more desirable (2) an adult telling teenagers to do something or not do something never worked.

I'm sorry, they're not even 'sexy', more cheap and nasty and moreover ridiculous esp. with pasty Irish exposed flesh (or tangerine fake tan) and the ensemble completed with killer heels that makes walking look like a baby giraffe attempting to keep its balance.

Most men are appalled that a father would knowingly allow their daughter out looking like a 2-bit hooker.

Sorry but we're not all perverts.

It's the same with every generation really. I've seen pictures of my Mother heading out in the 70's, and let me tell you, the skirts were fairly short back then.

Having said that, some of the clothes being marketed towards teens at the moment is a bit shocking. There's an ad for (I think it's) prettylittlething . com, and one model is wearing a completely see through dress and you can see her underwear through it. The ad is of course shot in a holiday location but picture that on an Irish teenager outside the Wright Venue minus the tropical backdrop, hmm :o

The last nearly-naked teenager I saw on the street was with her mother, who in desperation asked me if there was any chance I'd pretend to be her father in order to get her into some local hop down the street. Apparently the doormen weren't satisfied with the ID she had, and the mother didn't want to have to bring the poor kid home again after she'd gotten all dolled up for the night. I declined, but I have to admit to leering at the mother a tiny bit. :pac:

Nail on the head here. They aren't sexy. Being of the older generation (well im only 29) I find classy so much more sexy than tarty

I don't think anyone of the older generation really is the target market here. I think it's more the generation of their own age they're looking to impress in all fairness. At that age classy and sexy are all the one when they could hardly be expected to be any the wiser!
