Can you "lose" fibre broadband?

I moved house last month and the house I moved into had Vodafone fibre broadband, up to about 70Mbps, when I moved in. The service stopped at the end of January and I signed up for Sky Fibre. They wanted to instal a Sky-branded socket, so an engineer was booked for this week. Then, late last week, Sky rang to say that they couldn't give me fibre after all, only ADSL at speeds up to 11Mbps. Apparently, they explained, my fibre "slot" was taken while it was down for a week.

Is this true? I'm in Dún Laoghaire, fibre cabinets everywhere, the nearest about 250m from my house. I've tried eir and VF and they both say ADSL is all they can give me as well. My house had a fibre connection and now, apparently, it doesn't. Has this happened anyone else? Is there anything I can do about it?

Full cab = wait and steal it back. Watch for tenants moving out.

I'd image your cabinet has reached full capacity, so unless eir expand physical capacity you may have to wait until another slot becomes available.

I wonder how common this is and does it mostly affect areas with higher/lower density housing or is it simply more likely in areas where openEir has no direct competition.

How many ports does the "standard" cabinet have?

From memory 192 for a regular. A double isnt quite 2x IIRC. Then take away 4 test ports.

Its not about competition/high low density really, just where the demand is slightly higher than a single but not significantly higher to warrant the extender.

Thanks for the replies. I still find it hard to take that the house had fibre last Monday and didn't last Thursday.

Any advice on what to do to ensure I get any slot that becomes available in the future? If I called openeir would they tell me if they were planning to increase capacity in the area?

Is Siro or eir fibre extreme in your area?

They wouldn't be effected.

I don't think Siro is available in Dublin. The Eir line checker is telling me that 12Mbps is the maximum available speed from my line, so I assume their Fibre Extreme isn't available either.

Thats a shame, virgin are ramping up a little, so if you're in/near Dun Laoghaire you may get it soon.
