I imagine the additional pods with funding is going to let them have more diverse stories/pieces.

I wonder when the irish times were sponsoring did they have any say in podcast content.

Or did the lads just play it save with rugby , football and gaa.

I wonder is there more to Richie's role in this new set up than meets the eye. I know he retired young but presumably be would be in a way better financial position than the other lads - is he maybe funding them some of the way?

His own pundit profile needs work also and the exposure he gets from the SC link up already helps him on that front.

Motorsports don't exist on Second Captains either.

And we should all be thankful for that. 'Sport' for people who don't like sport. An easy way to identify a bore.

I doubt it. He retired early and from a low level. I'm sure he was making relatively decent money as a footballer but how much would Millwall have been paying him? He was there for eight years and retired 13 years ago.

I doubt he's flush enough to fund Second Captains. Unless he has been making sophisticated and well thought out investments since retirement, which may be the case.

I'd say it's just a presenting job for Sadlier. I could be wrong about everything.

The lads know what they're doing. They'll have a very accurate idea of the minimum numbers they'll need to get to fund this. When they left the radio station plenty of people thought it was a mad move to set up podcasts, but they did great. I hope it all works out for them.

Yes but why exactly would they want to hire an outsider as an alternate presenter? That's another mouth to feed.

What's with all the Richie hate? I think he's a great addition to the team. I'd like a few more ex-footballers on the show rather than all journalists. The lads said they'll do shows based on what the subscribers want. I reckon we all brigade and get Ken to do a show about something stupid, like hairstyles.
And we should all be thankful for that. 'Sport' for people who don't like sport. An easy way to identify a bore.

Well, that's a stupid statement. You'll need to do better.

    Ha, great idea.

I demand a full podcast on Ken's thoughts on stupid neon coloured boots. Especially those one pink, one yellow ones from a few years back.

Because it lightens the load on Eoin and offers more variety to the listeners. In OTB they had a team of researchers and admin staff doing the donkey work for them. Here they don't. Asking any of them to prep for 6 podcasts a week is a lot. Bringing Richie in makes it a lot easier.

I see Richie is/was boning former Miss Ireland Holly Carpenter according to the red tops.

    Well Done Richie!

Easier maybe but they are diluting their product. And adding cost apparently, at a time when they have been cut loose and lost their main sponsor .

And I wouldn't be sure about the teams of researchers stuff. This was newstalk remember, current affairs presenters claimed they had to buy their own newspapers.

Anyway, IMO there is most likely a commercial explanation for Richie's new role. Nothing wrong with that and I want to see them take off but Richie isn't great at all (interview with Luke Fitzgerald was the same question over and over again for half an hour) so not without risk. He could damage whatever it is that they have worked so hard to build if he comes to be perceived as a full member of the team.

They'd probably be better off giving Mark Horgan one of the shows rather than Ritchie Sadlier. Horgan is usually pretty good when he fills in for McDevitt. Bar the time he had a hissy fit over McGregor.

Anyone know the background music to that 'highlights reel' they've played a couple of times?

Amen brother! Feel like I'm losing my mind over these apparent rave reviews over Richie's podcast.

    Eoin > Mark >>>>>>>>Richie

I hope it works out too and I love the show but I can't see them making the numbers required for this to work. Subscriber numbers will be tiny. I like most can't see myself paying for a podcast, game on and OTB will do.

I like Shane Horgan and I thinks he's a very good and interesting rugby analyst/pundit. But having him, either on his own or with Gerry Thornley, on the show the whole time was getting very stale and quite monotonous.

I was delighted when Eoin said at the start of the show yesterday that Shane Jennings would be on to chat about rugby. Otherwise I would have skipped the segment if it had been Shaggy (and to add some context, rugby would be one of my favourite sports).

I missed the announcement, so only tuned in on Thursdays episode. A brave move by the lads. I hope its a success, as I like a majority of the output and hopefully they can sustain it.

I probably will subscribe initially to give it some start up support, but genuinely I often struggle sometimes to listen to the Monday double podcast before Thursdays shows, and again to listen to the both the Thursday shows before "events" happen on a friday and saturday that make the previews largely useless!

The whole album is brilliant. Except "Good Times".

You're more than likely paying for that anyway whether you like it or not or even listen to it and I can guarantee you whomever presents it is getting paid a lot more money than Owen,Ken, Murph and the boys.

I suppose most listeners would also listen to OTB as well, so it'll probably come down to whether just OTB is enough for them. Ive been listening to the lads since the Wagon Wheel pizza days and will be subscribing as I think it's the best sports radio out there. It's a pity that a lot of people seem to play the OTB and second captains against each other. I enjoy lots of the OTB show and there's room for 2 successful sports shows in this country I reckon.......In a perfect world the Second Captains would be back on the radio each evening but that looks like it's never going to happen......used to love listening in the nights of Midweek PL games.

I'd imagine they'll do a week at the start or at some point of the paid version of the service via the free podcast stream, show people what it's like

Has the four years of free Podcasts not been enough to make up your mind? :p

Ah I said a while back I wouldn't be subscribing anyways but I think it'd be a good idea for those who are on the fence to see what's on offer.
