great cycling mileage, this might have something to do with the tiredness!!

As the others have said take encouragement from the positives and work on the things you have pinpointed as causing issues.

Head up you are doing great for an auld one;) He puts me in that category!! We'll see how good he is when he's in our age category in a few short years!!!:D

Week 1, operation run faster :pac:

So the plan for the next few weeks is to work on my mile time, BG kindly sent me a plan that seems to fit perfectly with the bike commuting as it has lots of 'x training' built in. Monday and Friday are optional rest days so I am going to aim to work from home on one of those days for the coming weeks, if I can't do that I will sacrifice the Thursday run as my rest day. Will keep one eye on the energy levels too and just rest if I need it. I

    This week is :
    Monday: Rest or X train
    Tuesday: 5 x 800 @ 5K race pace with 2 min recoveries
Wednesday: 30 mins easy or x train
Thursday: 35 mins easy + strides
    Friday: rest or x train
    Saturday: 8 x 200m @ goal 1 mile pace with 1 min jog recoveries
    Sunday: 40 mins easy

    Monday 23rd January
Rest (mostly). Worked from home so no bike and no running just the usual walks with the dog. Dug out the workouts Myles did up for me last year, have been very neglectful in that area, and did the myrtle routine along with some yoga stretches in the PM. Turfed out all the sugary items from the press too!

    Tuesday 24th January
Session: 5 x 400m @ 5k pace with 2 mins jogged recoveries. I looked at McMillian before I came out to see what lap times I should be doing for 5K pace, or so I thought... I put in my jingle bells 5k time and it told me my training times for 400m should be between 1:43 + 1:49....Possibly but that's not my 5k PACE and I never copped that.. Jogged up to the club which gave me a decent warm up but arrived just as the session was about to start to so no dynamic stretches. Most of the club were doing their tempo so only 4 of us on the track and the other 3 were doing 300's, 12 of them or something. I opted to stick to my measly 5 x 400's! Laps were

    1:44 (hr 135)
    1:51 (hr 173)
    1:49 (hr 172)
    1:56 (hr 170)
    1:59 (hr 170)

All over the shop really and I needed every second of the 2 min recoveries but felt exhilarated afterwards. Did one cool down lap on the track, chatted for a few mins and jogged off home to bring the total to 4.5 miles. Will sit down tomorrow and work out my lap times for all the upcoming sessions so I know what I should be doing beforehand.

Best of luck with the new plan! The 200m sessions were my favourite :D. When's the goal race. Paced mile in March ?

Thanks :D I signed up for the series so there's one on 22ND Feb, 22nd March & 19th April. Will use the Feb one as a tester to see how it's going.

    Wednesday 25th January
Bike commute 24.2 miles - so much for easy!! Very windy on the way in, took me longer than usual but the amazing sunrise on the way in made it worthwhile, first morning in a long time it was getting light when I was leaving the house. Cycle home was faster with mostly a tail wind but a couple of nasty side gusts that sent me and the bike wobbling were a bit scary! The wind is my most hated element..

    Thursday 26th Jan: 35 mins easy = 3.1 miles @ 11:11 avg HR 135.
Plan said to do 6 x strides of 100m but the club AGM was on and I'd barely left enough time to get home and change superman style so I just ran the last 2/300m fast. Lovely evening for a run, enjoyed this even with the rushing.

    Friday 27th Jan 2.5 miles @ 11:33 avg hr 132.
What a difference a day makes :( I've switched to getting the bus on the days I'm not cycling so had a genius idea to get off in Littlepace & run home which would be about 3 miles or 30 mins ish. The first mile of this was lovely, felt good despite the annoying backpack but then the old dizzyness came at me again with a vengeance, I had to stop and walk twice and cut the run short at 2.5 miles. I had signed up for the Helfire IMRA on Saturday but knew this was out of the question now #gutted.

So, nothing yesterday and today, slept for 10 hours, had a couple of long lie ins and yesterday took a walk on the canal with the dog, nothing strenuous. Clearly the body is not ready for a plan, I probably shouldn't be doing any speed work and I need to take things a little easier  Still waiting for last blood results (since 6th Jan) will hopefully get them next week as they've finally arrived at specialists office.

Best of luck to everyone running Raheny this afternoon, will be over cheering on and hopefully nab a flapjack from the boards.ie bakeoff :p

Sorry to hear you have to miss Hellfire, AM. Patience, your time will come.

Easy for me to say I know, I'd be tearing my hair out if it was me. Hope you get good news from the lab.

Yep, that's the problem, I have zero patience....It's clear I've been doing too much  probably best to put that down in black and white and acknowledge that aquinn has been on my case about this since December and that as always, she is right. I will have to make do with the cycle mutes and the odd jogged parkrun for the foreseeable future and be glad that I'm able to do that.

Great to see everyone yesterday and witness all those amazing PB's and of course nothing in life is better than watching The Claw in action :p.

Seeing as there's a bit of running related news I'll do a bit of an update :)

Results are in for the Women's meet & train winter league and my team won their category! Okay the category is Bronze but we won :D Delighted with that as it's the first time I've been a scorer on a team.

Haven't run a step in two weeks but am back on the bike this week and feeling good. Finally got the results of my bloods and some antibody tests I had in December. The good news is that the type of Graves disease I have is the kind that 'usually' burns out after 18 months of treatment (only 8 more months to go.....) so fingers crossed. The bad news is my levels are up again so the meds have been increased again.

Given the level of activity I was doing in November & December and the fact my bloods are up, I'm starting to come around to the annapr school of 'the training was too much for you' thinking. Certainly all the signs are pointing to that even though I didn't want to believe it (and the specialist said no too!). Anyway, FWIW Anna you were probably right all along :)

I'm happy enough sticking to the bike for the coming months and will concentrate on strength training too while I have the opportunity but no more racing, zero. If anyone sees me attempting to so much as race for a bus trip me up!! I'll do the odd parkrun at easy pace but not for another month or two.

No doubt see you at a race soon, I'll be out supporting whenever I can!

Congrats on the category win !

Sorry you've to take a step back from racing for a while but sounds like you've plenty to keep you going.

The cycling will keep your fitness up so no worries. Main thing is to get sorted and at least you know what to do and are sensible enough to do it. . . Aren't ya???

    Congrats on the team win.

Congrats well done on win :) bummer about no racing, but the positive is it's only for 8 months and not forever. Keep smiling :)

Congratulations on the bling/silverware AM, that's great news ... imagine what's ahead of you next year when you're on the other side of this illness :)

I don't think there isn't a boardsie here that hasn't their fingers crossed for you that this disease burns itself out rapidly.

Just a thought but you could throw a yoga class in there each week, it really compliments the biking and strength stuff without being overly taxing. I've enjoyed it since I introduced it (the one I do is oh so very gentle) and I think I'll keep it up year round now.

I was just thinking last night that 8 months brings me to Sept, just in time for the XC season, the winter league series and Jingle bells again :D

Yes! I should have specified what I meant by strength, it will mostly be yoga, there's a lovely class at the top of my road every Thursday that I've done a few times, it's good but also very zen and chilled out. I'll work on the exercises Myles gave me earlier in the year too, nothing too strenuous.

I'm trying not think about how much older I'll be by the time I get back to running again  but if TBL can do it..... :p

    Thanks folks :)

Well done AM. The racing was a real bonus along with the positive reflection. Maybe one feeds the other.

Well done on the win! Delighted, more club honours :D

You're an inspiration to us all, you just keep the chin up and keep coming back despite what's been thrown at you.

See you back at the track in September (a shiny new tartan one by then too hopefully!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭snailsong

Your on the way out of it now, look forward not back. When the shackles are off in September there'll be no stopping you.
And don't let age be an excuse, of course it's easy for a young lad like me to say that.;D.

So long as you get the distance right this year!! :p

Patience, girl, you'll be back... slowly but surely. I'm sure we could tackle an easy IMRA (if there is such a thing) in the meantime!
