we have a day and night meter in our new house (moved in dec 2016). electricity bills are still crazy high and im wondering now if they have mixed up day and night readings. day reading is 1.5 times night!?
how can you tell on these meters which is which? its just labelled as 1 and 2 on digital display

Have a look at this video it explains how the meter you have installed works
    https://www.esbnetworks.ie/existing-connection/meters-readings/how-to-read-your-meter/electronic-domestic-meters

Then you can start from there and try and identify what is using the unit
do you have an immersion in the house maybe it was left on by mistake

I don't have a digital meter so cannot be sure but maybe buttons you can push to check
You say that your meter shows 40% night usage of overall usage. That seems ok
