    Ken Early politics show?

I'd like to know what John Giles thinks about that!

Is that genuine for signing up? Looks a dodgy web address as opposed to secondcaptains.com and it's in dollars.

I seen it on reddit so I assume it's genuine.
Loads of podcasts use Patreon for this kind of thing.
SC said they'll reveal all on Monday though on Twitter.

Interesting, they have outlined what the shows are:
    • The Second Captains Podcast
    • Second Captains Football
    • Ken Early Politics Show
    • All breaking news podcasts

That's actually something I asked about a while back, might have to get sub now...

They mention as well that you'll get a private link to get all shows on any podcast player. I assume they're clever enough to link this to usernames/etc so access can be revoked once you stop paying, things like that...

Where you get that list? I can't find it.

It doesn't show on mobile page if you're browsing on your phone.

Anyone else think that they might really struggle for content across those shows??

You could argue that it's spread pretty thin even in the current format.

It's could be a long and repetitive summer with no Olympics, Premiership, Euros etc.

Think I'll subscribe until the end of the football season. Don't fancy listening to Murph every day of the summer, talking about GAA. Will sign back up then as the football season approaches then.

I will definitely subscribe - love listening to the show and podcasts are the one thing I run out of on a weekly basis.

€60 a year times 10,000 subscribers would give €600,000 - after costs they could split a decent wage you'd imagine. 20,000+ subscribers and they'd be laughing. I'd be really interested to see how many subscribers they get - I've a feeling they'll do much better than people expect.

I hope so anyway as they are currently filling 4 hours a week for me with podcasts and even with that and a few others I often run out. I love the podcast format - if they went back to radio or left it altogether it would leave a void for me.

Worth it for this alone for me!

With one show dedicated to politics there will only be one extra sport show so I doubt they'll run out of material to cover. One downside though is that they'll be less likely to be honest about their views on some topics due to the risk of annoying and losing subscrbers.

For instance there will never be another Mark Horgan MMA takedown, in fact I'm surprised they allowed that to air so close to the changeover to a subscription service - makes me think that this was a recent decision possibly forced on them rather than part of a longer term plan.

I'd say 10000 subscribers is the absolute minimum they need to make this work. They need to pay a wage to all five of them plus Sadlier and pay all the guests and cover their overheads. €600,000 sounds like a lot but when you break it down it's not actually that much.

I emailed them earlier looking for some info regarding how the paid content works, they emailed me back pretty much immediately.
"When you subscribe, you’ll be able to use your private access code to get the podcasts on all the regular apps and devices so you can both download and stream. You can install it on a number of devices as long as they’re all registered to you. It is one membership access code per person obviously.
There won’t be yearly subscriptions but there will be some nice extra bonuses for signing up monthly. Hope that will do!
    Thanks a million
    Mark

    "

As others have said, ill definitely sign up for a few months, its buttons for the amount of endless highly enjoyable hours they have provided over the years for free and they deserve to have a bit more financial stability in their lives, I always wondered to myself how much revenue they could make with only one main sponsor up until recently as there is a big crew there as opposed to a one or two man band. Its a risky business model IMO but i really hope it works out for them.

The Anfield Wrap podcast did the same model. I read before they are able to pay something like 8-10 people from the earnings off it.

I've supported other podcasts through Patreon in the past, it's a great site. Having said that I wouldn't sign up for anything until its official from the lads themselves.

€5 a month is decent value but I cannot be funding a politics show from Ken Early. It'll be about as Fair and Balanced as Fox News.

I said a few pages back that the show won't have much of a future if they continue to make their show for a continuously niche market. With subscriptions and them setting their political stall out, I'll give it until Christmas until it's done.

Yes, same here. I'm not paying for Ken's political show, or Ritchie for that matter, but I'm not averse to paying something. Why can't they charge as you go/consume?. More of an a la carte option.
I'd like to support the guys and it makes me sick to see what the RTE Sports department splurge on some of the mediocrity they have. Lots of people pay for that without a second thought.
Pay as you go is the way forward and it will have to be for RTE at some stage too; as more people move away from 'traditional' media sources.

Ye anti-Earlyites seem to be in the minority here so I wouldn't be so sure about your prediction. Same for the niche market, majority of paid pods are aimed at niches. Anfieldwrap being prime example.

Oh, I like Ken but don't agree with his politics or at least do not like the lack of balance when he does discuss these things.

The listenership can only decline when they segment their audience.

Unless, of course, people agree with him.

Edit: y'know people who don't care about football, but do care about the world being dragged backwards by the remarkable self interest of a small group of ....

    Sorry, getting off topic there

Is there really going to be a Ken Politics show or is that just rumour? I can just imagine he'd have Una Mullally on every second week. I would give it a wide berth if that's the case.

I don't mind Ritchie Sadlier as a guest but not sure I want to listen to him doing his own show every week but I guess you can always skip what you don't want.

I would say a fair sized majority of second captains listeners would be more in sympathy with Ken's take on Trump/Brexit then would be in yours.

I was in two minds whether to pay or not, because there is only going to be one dedicated football show. The Ken Early Politics Show is the reason I'm going to subscribe.

Its 32c a podcast. Why bother with pay as you go at those costs?

Podcasts are my favourite thing about the internet. It's the diversity of being able to find good talk radio across such a wide range of subjects that make it so compelling. I'll be subscribing; as I already do to a few other podcasts through Patreon. Ideally I'd like to see Patreon offer a Netflix style model for premium podcasts.

It's not the point. I don't want to fund Ken's juvenile echo chamber witterings on politics. I accept that many do want their opinions reinforced and what they gain from that is beyond me; but I think it's not very healthy debate.
Now, if he was prepared to get someone on to argue the toss and offer an alternative view, then maybe....

As long as its entertaining I couldn't give a rats ass if its fair and balanced
