Things to do in Mayo

I'm heading up to Westport for a few days tomorrow. I have a car and was wondering what things there were to do and see in Mayo. I'm aware of Westport house and drives around Achill Island and the Museum of Country Life but is there anything else worth seeing in Mayo at this time of year?

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!:)

Cycle the green way?

Maybe it's still too cold for that, I'm not in Ireland right now! If so, there's plenty of nice pubs!

Since your driving a loop drive from Westport to Louisburge to Leenane and back to Westport is good. The weather looks really bad otherwise I'd suggest a greenway cycle from Westport to Newport. Or Castlebar to Turlough which is shorter.

Pontoon is worth visiting too, one of my favourite places. There is one pub in Pontoon. Very tranquil and peaceful place. Not sure if serves grub.

If your not interested in long drives Old Head is worth a visit.

You have a car so the whole of Mayo is open for you to explore. A few days won't be enough to see everything in Mayo, but you would get to see quite a lot. As said earlier, the Mayo North website is a mine of information on things to do in Mayo. With careful planning, you should get to see quite a lot of what Mayo has to offer. You'll just have to come back again for another visit!

Healys is the pub in Pontoon, they serve food and its been really good each time I have been there. The guinness and steak stew is fab if its on the menu!

I'm interested in this but I'm a walker. Is it for pedestrians too?

In wesport for a couple days myself.

Just looking on map, is it the N59 (Newport Rd) out of wesport? looks like some parts have no footpath?

Day trip to Clare Island- Ferry service at Roonagh, about three miles south of Louisburgh - go up to the old lighthouse for a dramatic view at edge of Europe.

No you never have to walk on the main road but you do have to cross it once or twice. Actually now that I think of it if you are starting off in the town centre there is a short part you have to walk on a road, just after the turn off to Carrowholly but it's a minor road and it's not busy so it's safe.

Climbing Croagh Patrick while in Westport is an obvious thing to do.

Drive to Castlebar and visit the Country Life Museum which is is absolutly brilliant http://www.museum.ie/Country-Life

The Pub and Hotel in Pontoon is closed and actually are both in a state of disrepair.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Did a drive to Connemara/Kylemore Abbey, a drive to and around Achill, a drive around central/Souh Mayo and met up with some friends who live here. Lucky them!

Westport is a great town. So well laid out. Back to Dublin tomorrow but visiting Westport House first.

Win or lose tomorrow in Croker there will be many from Mayo in the big smoke tomorrow

Then back to God's own county to meet all our visitors and prepare for the All Ireland in September
