      Ah here, one of the penalties Heaslip gave away was for holding on. Pure tripe. Should we have a rule where whoever gives away the most penalties is dropped for the next game, yes that'd show them....

      Been reading loads of ott statements on here. Intensity wasn't high enough in the first half leaving a mountain to climb. Heaslip never plays badly. He just plays slightly less well than previous games. The whole team played slightly less well and still nearly beat a Scotland side who had their best performance for years.

      I think we'd be far more balanced with

      6.POM
      7.VDF
      8. Heaslip/Stander

      I'd pick CJ, lots more would pick Heaslip. I think they are quite similar in their strengths. On form i'd have CJ. But Heaslip's peaks have been higher then CJ has ever got to. Heaslip was nominated for WPOTY last year!

      I don't think he had a bad game. 2 penalties and a bad offload. CJ gave away 1 penalty and had a knock on late.

      I'd have POM ahead of Stander at 6 for turnover potential, lineout ability and leadership on the field. Plus we'd have a lot more balance.

      I'd have VDF ahead of Seanie because I don't think SOB is fully fit yet. Seemed to run out of steam. Also VDF is more dynamic around the field and on form has earned his shot IMO.

      But i'm just a fan with no idea what's going on behind the scenes. Joe knows!

      Kearney and Heaslip and a few others. They are the faces associated with success and it just seems some people won't tolerate this.

      This was a very slightly correct charge at one stage. Not in the last 5 years though, where his average game is to an extraordinarily consistent high level.

      Earlier in his career, he was much more variable. Some games were quite anonymous - almost lazy looking. And then one in five games would be a world class bravura one. Which made the poor ones all the more frustrating, and did make it look a little like he just turned it on now and again as the mood took him.
      But those days are long gone. His contribution game in game out for both Leinster and Ireland in recent years is beyond criticism.

      well ive seen his name associated (by non irish publications) with the distinguished giants of zinzane brook, heinne muller, bob skinstad, mervyn davies, dallaglio ....

      there have been good irish 8s back in the amateur days, but none would be at heaslips level... and absolutely none of the professional era 8s would be anywhere close to him.
