Notice how generous the span on that bridge is - I think the next flyover at Kilcloghans has ample room underneath too - perhaps at some future point, this road will become a motorway though the necessity for it will be quite some time away unless Tuam becomes an expanded town to help ease congestion in Galway City.

The reason that there is a generous span is that there will be six lanes going under the flyover 4 lanes and 2 slip roads as the flyover is so close to the junction see pics below

They're great shots - shows good progress on this junction over the winter. About the room under the bridge, I know about the merge and diverge lanes there, but there's still a lot of width in the verges underneath - perhaps they're for sight lines or maybe the cutting slopes have yet to be profiled - we'll see how it turns out.

The water pond is multi functional, it allows silt to settle and deposit in the slow moving water of the pond and not clog up the water course that it is draining into. It also allows for flash flood water coming off the road to be slowed down before entering into the stream/watercourse preventing flooding down stream. It can also helps to catch oil spills if they happen on the road, before they are washed downstream, polluting long sections of drains. These are a common sight on new builds nowadays.

The road doesn't cross the river clare in Tuam. It only crosses a small tributary called the Nanny which would be about 500m south of the junction shown in the picture.
