There's a thing now
While Fast RMX is on the way with it's F-Zero lite stylings we have another pretender to the Wipeout/F-Zero throne on the way,
Redout from 34BigThings, an Italian developer.
Here's the announcement trailer

Thing is, it's already out there, on PC via Steam
http://store.steampowered.com/app/517710
And I'm wondering if anyone has tried it yet?

The reviews seem good for the PC version at least
“Redout delivers excitement I haven’t felt since Nintendo released the last great F-Zero title over a decade ago. I don’t know if it’s the best racer I’ve ever played, but it’s almost certainly the most exhilarating, and earns its place among the very games it takes inspiration from.”
9.5 / 10 – Game Critics

“Fast, hard and really impressive, Redout is a perfect heir to the greatest arcade racing games. A delightful challenge that will test your skills and it will cause to overflow your adrenaline.”
9 / 10 – Meristation

“We are looking at an AG Racer which quality level is outstanding”
8.9 / 10 – Everyeye

Seems silky smooth and very fast, with a nicer aesthetic than Fast RMX.

Nintendo Switch Vs Wii U: What's The Difference?

The new Nintendo Switch has finally been unveiled and the question on everyone’s lips: Is this a significant enough upgrade compared to the Wii U? Let’s break it down…

Design & Display - Two Steps Forward, One Back

The Nintendo Switch represents a fundamental change of strategy from Nintendo.

When sat in its bundled Switch Dock, the console connects to your TV and looks like a standard Xbox or PlayStation rival. But this being Nintendo it has tricks up its sleeve. The Switch can be removed from its Dock, its Joy-Cons attached directly to either side and used as a standalone portable gaming device.

In this mode it measures 239 x 102 x 13.9mm and 297g or 398g (Joy-Con controllers attached), making it smaller than a Wii U GamePad. The more refined (adult?) design also has a touch of the iPad about it.

As for the Switch’s display, it matches the 6.2-inch dimensions and capacitive touchscreen of the Wii U GamePad while also delivering a significant increase in quality. Gone is the Wii U’s woeful 854 x 480 native resolution for a bump to 720p. This isn’t particularly high compared to most smartphones and tablets these days, but colours are vibrant and it is compatible with 60fps gaming.

Performance - Faster But How Much?

Perhaps the most contentious aspect to the Nintendo Switch is whether its performance delivers enough of a step up from the Wii U and right now we simply don’t know.

Nintendo has never prioritised raw power, but it remains extremely cagey about the Switch. All it has said so far is the console uses a custom-built Nvidia Tegra chipset with similar architecture to the Nvidia’s GeForce graphics cards. There’s a custom ‘NVN’ API that Nintendo says is extremely efficient and Nintendo promises 1080p gaming will be available when the console is docked and connected to your TV via HDMI.

How will this compare to the Wii U? It’s hard to say. Compared to heavyweights like the PS4 Pro the Wii U is not at the races and it was never meant to be. A 4K gaming rig this is not.

Elsewhere the Switch only has 32GB of internal storage, which I find inexplicable in this day and age but it can be augmented by microSD, SDHC and SDXC cards up to 128GB (edit: 2TB). There’s also Bluetooth And 802.11ac WiFi.

As for games, they run on cartridges rather than the Wii U’s proprietary optical discs meaning there is currently no backwards compatibility between the two. This is somewhat surprising, but I wouldn’t rule out Nintendo enabling backwards compatibility via a digital service in future.

Battery Life - Larger Equals Better?

Wii U battery life was initially a major misstep from Nintendo and it ultimately upgraded the 1500 mAh battery to 2550 mAh which boosted stamina from three hours to five to eight hours.

By contrast the Switch is fitted with a much larger 4210 mAh battery, but it looks like battery life will still be mixed. On the plus side Nintendo says the battery can “last for more than 6 hours” but it also says that’s highly dependent on how the console is being used and the company warns playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will flatten the Switch’s battery in just three hours.

Charging time is also slow with Nintendo explaining the Switch will take three hours to fully replenish a flat battery when docked and in sleep mode. Furthermore Nintendo warns: “Please note: the internal battery cannot be removed. If the battery needs to be replaced, we plan to offer paid replacement via Nintendo Customer Support.”

On the plus side the Switch uses a standard USB-C connector which future proofs it and will be easy to replace.

Price - Competitive Core, Expensive Add-ons

At this point it’s arguable that the Switch is very different from the Wii U, but not the seismic upgrade we might’ve hoped for. Then again that is reflected in the price. The Switch costs just $299.99, the same as the basic version of the Wii U when it launched. For this outlay you’ll get a pair of Joy-Con controllers and a Switch Dock.

But not so fast. While this setup is enough for the basics, costs can spiral quickly. Extra Joy-Con controllers are $49.99 each or $79.99 for a pair, a Switch Pro Controller is $69.99, you’ll need about $30 on a microSD card, maybe another $30 on an extra Joy-Con Charging Grip and games are $60. I can’t see why you’d need a second Switch Dock other than to move the console around the house, but that’s an eye watering $89.99.

As such the Switch is competitive in its base form, but accessories do add up. We also await Nintendo pricing for online play. This will be free until the Fall, but after that I suspect we’re looking at something not a million miles away from the $59.99 per year Sony and Microsoft both charge for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live respectively.

Bottom Line

The Nintendo Switch is a compelling and innovative upgrade on the Wii U, but perhaps not quite the slamdunk some expected. Questions remain over how powerful the new console is, how much it will cost to play online and whether backwards compatibility will be addressed in future.

That said it remains uniquely Nintendo. The Switch is a console no other company would’ve or could’ve made and, as always, its Nintendo’s indisputable gaming credentials which remain the biggest selling point. For everyone else, until questions are cleared up about performance and third party titles the jury remains out.

Just back from playing 7 hours with the Switch at Pax South San Antonio and wanted to share with ye guys, its all types of awesome, one of best demos I have hand at a show. It keeps everything so simple yet offers so many ways to play and will be great for portable and multiplayer  gaming. It might be easy to just let the 1st adopters sell the system for Nintendo as people can share those joycons with people that dont own one and pull them into the Nintendo Magic. Then there is the dock and that great Pro controller for us Core gamers.

Some Impressions Hardware:
• I finally understand that pricepoint and now I feel 299$ is justified, its a console that comes with a screen and 2 Controllers.
• Pair JoyCons + JoyCon Grip + 2 side parts allow Std+Motion+HDRumble offers so many ways to play.
• The Console is tiny, it seems slimmer than my Gear S7 with its case on.
• Take away joycons that is a seriously small thin device that can output Zelda graphics.
• Graphics are something people will be impressed with when they see it 1st hand, its easy to forget to appreciate its outputting from a handheld.
• Love the fact it has MicroSD and USB-C. This along with Region free and hopefully a good online system and eshop and this will be great,
Some Impressions Games:
• Mario Kart 8: Graphics looked great on 200 inch screen at the show not to mind HD TVs and Switch Screen. Battle mode was great!
• SnipperClips: Didnt care for this until i played it. Probably fav game I played here, super fun co-op.
• Arms: Again didnt care until i played it but was most fun I had at the show. Its the splatoon for fighting games &I was tired after playing this one :)
• Bomberman: Kinda what ud expect, multiplayer was fun and it it was colors were bright and showed off the screen..
• Splatoon2: Couldnt have stayed playing this all day, really showed off the giro controls when playing handheld mode. Day 1 purchase.
• Ultra Street Fighter 2: Was looking fwd to this but now feels a bit of a rehash, will wait and see. Old sprites looked crap.
• 1-2 Switch: HDRumble was really cool with the guess the balls game, but its merely a tech demo, boggles mind its not a pack in.
• Zelda TBOW: 3 hour wait in Q was worth a 20 minute demo. Dear god it was gorgeous, cannot fathom how device so small is generating those graphics.
Zelda stole the show. Off-screen and onscreen play it looked epic.Voice Acting was great, combat while battling goblins felt great.
Removing Switch in and out of dock really was seamless, didnt even fell a click. JoyCons with their motion and multiplayer options will set this apart from anything Sony may try with a Vita Follow up, and I think Nintendo are really onto a winner here. Especially for working people folks with limited time to play and now for kids again too they can play anywhere!

Hope the helps, any questions just ask.

Was a fab day, I had a day 2 pass but gave it away as whole day in those crowds had me beat :) Zelda Q took 3 hours alone.

Id say dock is about 4 Switches deep, but that means nothing as its so thin, as I guarantee its thinness will blow all your minds once ye hold it.
Its about same as a good dam Pad mini for goodness sake. I cannot get over how its processor those graphics in that small factor.
Delighted they proper screen too, its fantastic, viewing angles match any top end phone and its crisp and bright.

Ha,glad its got a buzz going, SnipperClips just had that something, i was 10 seconds in and shouting at the screen and the guy next to me... Its be a hit with reviews for sure. Arms I loved it, too much so see below :) But I would love a single player game built in like Project Hammer it could be a good action game using that physics engine, think Turtles Arcade game mixed with ARMS motion controls.

Booked it off the day it was revealed. Pretty quite in work at the moment so It would likely drag with me just wanting to be home playing botw.

Plan is go to my buddies for pizza and mario kart on the 2nd and head to midnight launch at gamestop st Patrick street cork, assuming it will happen as staff seem confident it will, head home and play botw. Next day head out and get bomberman and hope 1,2 switch arrives at parcel motel and head to my bros at some point for some multiplayer fun.

Bought this on friday for £42 currently 4 cheaper than that :( but 128gb should be enough for a long time also ordered a 20100 mah power bank

As the price of solid state memory falls, by the time the majority of Switch consoles are sold the likes of a 128Gb micro SD will be coming in around €35.
It'll be interesting to see the size of a typical install, from the digital store, and what the space requirements are going to be.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,714 ✭✭✭Nollog

Botw is 13.4 GB

And about SD prices, isn't there a solid state memory shortage or something?

Belgian shops with French "parent" companies have started price-matching the Amazon France price of €299. No reduction in the place where I have my pre-order in, as of yet. :(

yea it's really not likely to happen in Ireland, we have next to no competition in the game retail marketplace not even a single credible online retailer, we also are a small market which is likely to be under supplied, there is no motivation to cut the price it would essentially be an act of corporate charity.

Got a phone call from Gamestop in Blanch basically confirming my order and letting me know about their 20% off on accessories deal.

Might be running a bit of a risk in not pre-ordering BOTW in a B+M shop. Have it ordered online so I'm hoping it'll get to me on time.

My concerns about the Switch are very well justified but my excitement is putting that into a back seat. Have March 3rd taken off so I'm looking forward to this.

I got a similar call. extended it to games, basically said any games not preordered wont be stocked.

I have BOTW ordered already. so ordered bomberman.

No mention of paying the €50 deposit on my online pre order.

Still haven't made up my mind whether to pick it at launch. Talking in store in Smyths on Friday he said preorders were still available. They had 70 in Athlone and about 1800 country wide preordered at the time. I'd like BOTW asap so tempted to get WiiU version but in the long run I'd prefer to have the Switch version. I'd like to see if I can wait till before Christmas for Mario and hopefully a price cut or at least a decent bundle. Will be in France in July so will be very tempted to pick one up then if I hold out then. Slight chance I might be in Belgium in April but they probably won't be back in stock by then.
