Would rather them catch ones texting and using social media.

It really needs to be drilled into them.

I don't believe in points system but the fine for using a phone should be a minimum of €500 then people may learn. €60 is nothing.

    Phones have taken over.

I still find it amusing ones driving flashy expensive cars which have all the mod cons and yet people still have phone up to ear.

Laws need a bit of an update

    - the garda should be allowed take the phone on the spot

    - make the networks block their phone number for a week ( divert it to "this driver was caught using a phone while driving" message )

Yes can never get my head around this, are they just thick and don't know how to connect the phone to the inbuilt bluetooth as they don't read manuals? It should be a triple fine and points for anyone caught in these cases.

Pretty sure I passed that squad car last night. Car was on the hard shoulder of a busy dual carriageway with very low visibility. Guy in front got a shock and swerved a little to avoid the car. Might have been speeding as well, but I'm not sure. That scared me more than the car!

On the other hand not surprised at that. I see people with phones up to their ears all the times. All people need is a transmitter, plug into cigarette lighter, connect with Bluetooth, and you've a hands free kit.

Ah but you can't read/reply to texts, scroll through Facebook, open Snapchats or flick through Spotify from a hands-free kit. Glad to see the guards cracking down on this - it's terrifying how common it is these days!

It's the HGV drivers swerving on the road because they're texting that they need to eliminate. While it's good they're actually stopping people, a €60 fine is nothing, and three points isn't commensurate with the offence.

I wouldn't tar all HGV drivers with the one brush now to be fair!

There is a bad egg in every batch.

And yes I am a HGV driver.

Regarding phones. I said this before on the emergency services forum and I emphasise, I don't blame the Garda in the car, but I've seen plenty of Gardaí driving their cars with the phone up to the ear. I know it's on official business and they're authorised, but it does look bad. An earpiece can be got for around €20, a basic radio with built in Bluetooth around €60 (but most modern cars have built in Bluetooth anyway) if the high ranking want the ground troops to catch out phone users, give them the tools to lead by example.

    This too shall pass.

You can rule out the standard in car built in Bluetooth solutions anyway.
    A) how many phones can a given unit sync with before some must be deleted.
    B) I don't think a speaker blurting out sensitive details is a great idea. (Doesn't every body have that neighbour that sits in their drive to finish a conversation with the speakers at 110dB?)

A quality ear piece would be good but providing them with that would be acknowledgment that the gardai need to use personal mobiles to carry out their business. Ie if you officially provide them with Bluetooth shouldn't you officially be providing them with a phone? Android? Windows? Apple? Can't see it happening!
