Focus? My missus has one, had similar problem, no power, turned out to be gearbox. Lot cheaper than DPF to replace

  • Administrators Posts: 55,122 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

It's cheap because it's an OEM product. It doesn't have the Ford badge on it, but in all probability came from the same factory as the Ford one.

Not always of course, but if you shop around you'll probably get a good one for a fraction of the price.

I'm not a mechanic, but my own DPF is on the way out, so I've been checking around.
They're such a pain, seem to be a common fault in cars that have them.

I hear you can get rid of it entirely but it's a legal grey area or something.

Not the gear box, they read the error codes a few weeks ago and there was one for the DPF and one for the EGR.

EGR could potentially be the cause too in fairness, it's a lot cheaper to fix as well.

What you can do is drill out the centre so it just becomes a part of the exhaust pipe. But that apparently needs reprogramming the ECU to take account of the loss of back pressure.

My car measures the pressure on each side of the DPF, so I suspect that this is true.

The other (but not very environmentally friendly) option is to take it off and wash it out. The County Council would really appreciate all those heavy metals in the water system.

They can be bypassed easy enough and they'll still pass the nct. If it's the egr valve then you are laughing. Mine was giving jip on my last van so I went straight on to YouTube, took it out and cleaned it with oven cleaner (build up of carbon so it did the trick).

If you are near a motor factors then buy a bottle of Dpf cleaner and horse it in to the motor....then a 4th gear hammer down the n11 for 30kms or so should burn it off.

Again I'd look at a local independent mechanic and get rid of the dpf altogether.

The way the car is driving now I wouldn't be able to hammer anywhere in 4th gear, it's really sluggish. Struggled to drive up a hill earlier, had to drop to second and put the foot on the floor and it still didn't exactly fly up it.

    Yep.

We usually bring it to a bloke beside the wife's work in Kilmainham but she's not there tomorrow and I don't fancy driving the whole way there. Think there's an indy garage around the corner, going to ring them in the morning to see if they have the gear to read the Ford error codes.

It's what's colloquially known as 'limp home mode'. Usually the next time you start it, it will operate normally, so that's when you give it the welly. The DPF cleaners you put in the fuel tank are not worth the money. Useless.

Nah it didn't return to normal.

Limp moded to the shopping centre, was parked there for 2 hours and then limped home.

How much fuel is in the tank?

    Roughly 1/4 tank.

I don't know if this is true or apocryphal, but keeping the tank full or close to prevents limp mode.

    Worth trying anyway.

Edit: Actually thinking about this, I know my car has an additive that gets injected into the fuel tank every time you open the filler cap. Keeping the car close to full means you are opening the cap more often.

Sometimes you need to plug it into one of those diagnostic things to check the error code and take it out of limo mode. Any mechanic can do it in minutes, but will probably charge you to fix whatever is wrong with it.

You can get Bluetooth ones of them and use an app on your phone to clear any faults. Did it to mine a few times when I was having ecu problems and waiting to get it fixed

I actually understand the NFL stuff more than this.

Basically cars are expensive and annoying.

DPF = part of the exhaust on some diesel cars that removes soot and some other stuff from the emissions (I think). Needs to get to a certain temperature to operate effectively otherwise it can become problematic. If you're not doing enough miles in your driving it won't get to the operating temperature often enough.

That's about it in a nutshell. DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter.

Most cars with DPFs also have a reservoir of a specialist fluid that gets injected into the fuel tank every so often (usually when the fuel cap is opened) to help keep the DPF clean. It's called EOLYS fluid and there are a couple of diffferent grades of it.

It's expensive enough stuff (about €100-150 a fill) and often gets neglected at service. Some cars have ECUs that measure usage or actual levels and warn you when it's getting low.

DPFs are a nightmare if you're not doing the mileage to force them into regeneration mode. Usually if you go into limp mode they suggest checking the EGR and then possibly looking at a forced regen. You could try clean it as a few others have suggested but it's probably gone past the point of a cleaning to do it.

As someone who knows almost nothing about all of this, limp mode sounds like what happens when you've had a few too many and then go home to the misses for frisky times and are unable to perform. :D

Yes but this doesn't help Awec empty his exhaust. Or does it....

Mechanic was just round to look at it with the wee computer for 2 hours.

He is taking it away on Tuesday for a force regen and if that doesn't work will send it to be cleaned. The cost of force regen / clean is like 10% of replacement so well worth a go. He's also going to take a look at the EGR.

The car basically turns off the turbo and limits your revs. It drives like you're towing a bus.

I see the AIBA has come out and said that while there was no collusion at the olympics there was an atmosphere of collusion. So nobody was cheating it just seemed like there was cheating going on. Also, unrelated I'm sure, the suspended referees and judges will be reinstated on a "case by case basis".

I for one am glad that the integrity of amateur boxing has been upheld by this thorough, transparent investigation.

The only organisation which is doing more to attract people to fight sports such as UFC is the AIBA, it would seem.

I'll never be able to watch the Olympic boxing again with any level of interest.

After what happened to Roy Jones Jr they changed to the punch count rule, instead of using judges, and I think there was a very close vote at the next Olympics as to whether they wanted to keep it in the Olympics altogether.

It'd be nice to see them make changes to rectify the problem, or possible problem, but I doubt it.

    Brewdog Libertine Black Ale.

Have to say I really like that beer.
