    Sure do!

I've gone down the rabbit hole of detailing products again. Halp!

Looking for a polish to remove light/medium swirls and compound holograms. possibly a finishing polish (i want to put wax on top, no additional polishing)

so, CG P40 Pro Polish, CG Pro 3n? or Carpro reflect?

    Black VW Passat.

(on a side note, CG really do take the piss with their product range don't they. they seem to have 3 of every type of product necessary)

Certainly do, bit of an arse all right but there not only ones.

If your wanting them the v branded hybrid (v2, v4 etc) Polish's are pretty good, got a sample kit of detailshed last year did decent job on the old insignias dog claw scratches.

Only other ones I had revently are the autobrite polish set are good to.

Scholl S20 Black (http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/scholl-concepts-s20-black.html) is getting fantastic reviews anywhere I see it mentioned online. It's a compounding and finishing polish, all in one. It'll be my next buy when it comes to polish.

I've used CarPro Fixer. While it gives a decent amount of cut, it isn't very nice to work with. It has very little lubrication and dries out very quickly, it also produces an enormous amount of dust. I wouldn't use it again. I have Essence too, its a dream to work with in comparison and gives a phenomenal finish.

I'm a massive fan of Menzerna, they're 2200 Medium polish is great at removing swirls and leaves a glass like finish, great polish!

Have you found a QD that works well with fusso? I believe that because most QD's are carnauba based they don't work well with it because it is PTFE (Teflon) based. I just feel like I'm missing a step of my wash routine by not using one

I would second FN, Menzerna is a very good compound and they have a huge range.

Menzerna is a top class polish. The only problem is choosing which ones you want :D

Chemical Guys V range is also very good. It produces a lot less dust than Menzerna and has a longer working time as it doesn't dry out as quickly. It also smells a lot better than Menzerna and doesn't give you what I call a drug-free chemical headache!

When I was using the Fusso / KOG producta, personally I preferred 2 coats of fusso and leave it at that,
Lots of people prefer it topped with KOG.
When I did have Fusso on my silver I would never use a QD as I felt it was not needed. The beading seemes endless, but when it did finally decide to fall back I would just give it a top up coating of it.
    Hope this helps.

Hang one, just to be clear - are you using a machine? Because CG's P40 and Pro 3n wouldnt be considered a good polish to use with a machine, despite them saying it can be used for a machine.

Ronnie, on the Fixer; genuinely the first person Ive heard giving it any sort of negative feedback. Wonder is there anything contributing to this?
Not all polishes react in the same way; and it can happen that a product can be written off quite quickly due to this. I used Gtechniq P1 in the past and tossed it aside after two passes - found it to do practically nothing. Got a tip from another user, and tried it again, and it was far better....though still didnt out perform what I was loving at the time, Scholl S3 on a their Blue pad.
If you are finding that its drying out and dusting quite easily, you may be working it too quickly. Compounds are very different to finsihing polishes which are well lubricated and can be worked for extended times.

I've used Gtechniq P1 and I much prefer Chemical Guys V or Menzerna.

Really think their are too many variables involved to be able to say what a good compound/polish is. I've seen Larry from Ammo NYC polish with water and a pad (can't remember the video but it was extremely soft paint) I've even seen a few people test different combos side by side but how can you tell from a video the pressure they're using? Or do you have the machine they have? Did you use the exact amount of compound or polish they did? Is your pad as clean/new as theirs?

Personally I think if you're going by hand look for fillers or bite the bullet and either buy/rent/borrow a DA and go to town with whatever because most pad/polish combos can get great results but the last bit is down to your technique and if you can get that right you can pick up almost any polisher (DA or rotary) and any combination and get the results you want.

(I know I sound like the guy from AutoFetish but having seen the things he's done I kind of agree with him)

Detailing Shed have a D/A for rent as far as I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

Technique has a lot to do with it, no doubt - some people assume a set is a matter of just passing the pad across the surface once and thats the paint polished; not knowing a set is actually numerous passes to break down the polish etc. Others work a polish to hard and fast.

But another factor is, that a machine / pad / polish combo might give you amazing results on one paintwork, and could skip and bounce and just not really work well on another! Its having options available to try find the best...obviously thats not ideal for the enthusiast, but even having two of something helps - say pads from two different manufacturers, or polish from two different manufacturers.

Classic red Porsche one, had me raising my eyebrows when I seen that, that paint would mark if you looked at it wrong :pac: :pac:

Think he mainly watered down a menzerna polish though, he did his own range but stopped so guess he cant match the Menzerna stuff.

Finally got my buckets sorted out

Only thing left is a bucket dolly for each but that won't be for a while as I've nowhere to wash on even ground :-D

If you replied, 'Yeah, no bother, but it'll be 50 Euro', you might not get a Euro every time, but you might get the odd 50!! ;)

Damn right Curran! As you said yourself, never say you won't do something but put a nice price on it for yourself and you'd never know!

Out of interest how much would you guys charge or how much have you charged if a friend or family member wants a full paint correction and protection? Not including the freebies for the closer people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭Curran

What would you be happy getting per hour that you put into it + cost of products = what you charge! ;) It obviously varies from person to person, for whom you'd be doing it for.

A lot of people would be ignorant to the amount of work that goes into doing a paint correction; for example, they probably dont understand that the prep along could take up to 2 hours. One stage enhancement, another 6hrs, and applying protection / finishing touches, another 2hrs.

Thats a full days work - what's the least they'd be willing to do a days work for!!! ;)

You're down to the last 2 bilt and hamber auto foams now :)

Finally pulled the trigger and ordered some detailing but off DS,
    Some bilt hamber snow foam,
    Dry me crazy drying towel,
    Iron x
    And some carpro hydro2foam,

I normally snow foam the car, rinse and wash with meguairs wash and wax, so going to replace the meguairs with the hydro2foam, hopefully should see some nice results :)
