Oil Heating - Failed thermostat?

Hi folks - having some issues with oil heating system. Basically the burner (Riello 40) didn't fire at the usual time so went outside and tried the red button at the front of the burner. This worked and it fired up and ran.

The thermostat (pictured below) doesn't seem to be working (there are no internal thermostats inside the house). The radiators are much hotter than normal and turning the thermostat down to 1 doesn't have any effect. After about 30/40 minutes of continuous running of the burner, it will kick off for about 5 minutes and start again. I believe this might be high limit cut off kicking in? Do I need a replacement thermostat and temperature probes?

If it had turned off on the high limit stat, it would need to be reset to get it going.
Turn the pictured stat to one. Wait until it cuts out, then turn it to 3 or 4; it should start again.

Where the 2 capillary tubes cross over each other beneath the stat; one of them looks kinked. It that just a photographic illusion?

Well it is back to kicking in on it's own accord when it should as per timer clock. The problem is that the stat is still having no effect. I turned it down to 1 and yet the rads are still very very hot.

I went out and looked - it actually wasn't a kink, it just looked like that from the image. I did however find a some exposed wire right before the probs enter the boiler (pictured below). Would that have an effect?

Thats ok. It isnt a wire, its a tiny tube.

Alright so burner was firing and then I did as highlighted above - turned it to 1 and it knocked off. I then turned it back to 3 and it fired back up again.

Stat seems ok then. Might need a professional to check it out further.
