Should Ireland rename places named after British people?

There are many places in Ireland that were named after British oppressors and British things in general. Henry St. is named after Henry Moore, and Gardiner St is named after Luke Gardiner, husband of Elizabeth Montgomery.

In Dublin, going through the heart of the city, we have the "Royal" Canal.

The Wellington Monument was built by the British. The Wellington Testimonial was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. He was a leading military and political figure and member of the protestant ascendancy (the economic and social domination of Ireland).
I've spoken to people (older people) who said "Nelsons column should never have been taken down". Jesus. It's like keeping a statue of Hitler in the middle of a Jewish street in Poland. They should have kept the column, but replaced the statue on top with one of our own national heroes.

There are many places in Dublin and Ireland in general that should have been renamed after some of our own heroes and heroines. I'd much rather see the Markievicz Canal or the Kevin Barry Monument.

Go to Israel. You won't see an Adolf Avenue, Goebbels Gardens or Hitler Heights. Sorry for Godwinnig this thread so early, but it's the only appropriate comparison.

They already have and besides its nice to have a blend of street names after the English & of course Irish. Dublin was for such a long time an Anglicized city. The rich tapestry and architecture was influenced by the Brits. No need to ignore their presence.

You can have English names without names of people who butchered Ireland and suppressed the people. You won't see a Pol Pot street in SE Asia.

Aren't we past the whole "Brits r Bad!!" thing, or will we forever be bitter slaves about it. We've done enough to assert our autonomy without wasting more money on washing away a few names of people who were involved in shaping this land.

No, in fact it should be the complete opposite....People like Collins and Dev destroyed this country...Any mention of them on Street names or signs should be removed and their memories wiped from our consciousness

Poland have good relations with Germany, but they still wouldn't keep street names named after them.

Let us forget it was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Changing names will not change history.

It doesn't bother me. I would hate if politicians somehow believed it was a pressing issue.

The Problem with people like Wellington is that whilst he was born in Ireland he called himself English. I think he said something like just because one is born in a stable doesn't make one an ass.

I have no problem losing the names who's relationship with Ireland was only for Britains benefit.

There was some terrible brutality from the British powers and armed forces when they occupied Ireland, but I don't think it's in good taste to compare it with the Holocaust or the Cambodian genocide... :-/

Depends on who the place is named after - it's not like they were all brutes.

Wellington did not consider himself English. Anglo-Irish maybe, but certainly not English.

That phrase was said about him, by Daniel O'Connell, but since wrongly attributed to Wellington, for obvious reasons.

Depends on who the place is named after - it's not like they were all brutes.

Cambodia lost a third of its population under Khmer Rouge rule, Irelands population was halved under direct British rule. The only difference is time scale.

A wholesale elimination of of British-named places solely on the basis of their being British strikes me as more than a little simplistic.

Why are people so caught up with what a whole bunch of dead people did to another bunch of equally dead people a long time ago? It's not like either they or their regime is alive at the present day.

It's almost 100 years since the Irish Republic came into being. Are we not grown up enough as a nation to move on? - Look at what the rest or Europe has overcome within living memory - Germany, France, Britain, Italy and more. I'm proud of being Irish and regard people from every other nation in Europe (and beyond) as equals. I don't care a S**** what names are on the streets or which long gone military figures they commemorate. I'd be a lot more concerned by the reckless carry on of Brexit if you want to see a real threat from Britain. Not some ****e that happened two lifetimes ago.

I dont think you can equate Henry Moore or Luke Gardiner with Hitler & Pol Pot. But you will be hard pressed to find a place named after Cromwell.

I always thought Nelson bore a striking resemblance to Hitler.
Apart from his arm.
And his eye.
And the silly hat.
Other than that, the similarity is frightening.
