    Monday 2nd January 2017
    Plan
    rest
Actual 2m recovery with 2 kids, 1 dog and i very excited puppy.

Decided to try out my new toy and give the legs a bit of a stretch so it was a bit of a stop start run as trying to train the puppy on the lead but it achieve the goal of stretching the legs out.

    Total 2m @ 12.33 in 25.06

    Tuesday 3rd January 2017
    Plan
    6m Easy
    Actual 6m easy

Decided to do 2 x 3m laps in the Park at lunchtime and went with one of the other girls from work for her 5k run and then continued on lap 2 on my own. It was very cold out today but i had no base layer on and really missed it. I'm getting great use of my new gloves kids got me for Christmas, lovely proper running gloves, that actually keep my hands warm, not lik the ones i had before..:D

    Plan
    8m Steady
    Actual 10m Steady

So arranged to met Murph in Donedea to check out the course for this 50k trot we are doing next month!!!

We were well organised as I had the route on my phone and Murph has loaded it to his watch, so we checked out the lay of the land and away with us. . . .so first lap we did the scenic route of the Forest park ;) and then we followed the race route for 2 laps.
Its a good enough surface in most of it but if we get a lot of rain in the week leading up to the race it will be fairly mucky & slippy with all the leaves and mulch on the route in places. The "hill" was fine for 3 laps but i can see how after a few more it might become more challenging.

I delighted we managed to do this as i didn't get the impression it was laps and i am less worried about the lap part of the run, now it's just the distance part to worry about!!!

Lovely run and chatted the whole way round(I think i let Murph talk for a few minutes;) I was pretty wet by the end of the run as that horrible misty drizzly rain was falling. I got cold pretty quickly too so did a quick change of clothes before hitting the road home.

Great mornings work, slightly longer than planned but sure we had to get back to the carpark!!!

    10.04, 9.15, 9.34, 9.45, 9.25, 9.05, 9.03, 9.27, 9.08, 9.06, 9.18(.15)

    Total 10.15m in 1:35:20 @ 9.23

If I'm free(I'll know closer to the time) I'll head over for a bit....

By the way, just a note on the course. I saw it mentioned on the event thread about muck and leaves.. there are leaves in spots, and there can be some surface "muck". I say muck but it's not like mud, more of a snowy slush type of consistency.
I say this just so you know it's in no way slippery... There's plenty of grit underneath to bite into and don't think I even had a little slip/loss of traction on the course last year. There was plenty of areas slippery/muddy alright off course around reg area...
There's one or two puddles around alright but they are easily negotiated ☺☺

Thanks Martyboy, I was over there this week and got a feel for the course. Yes it will be fine, as long as theres not lots & lots of rain in the week heading up to it!!!

Thanks MrsMc & Annapr the more the merrier, the louder the better!!!:D

Annie I'll bring a flask but can't guarantee i'll share more than a cupful, depends on how cold i get!!! #coldcreature

I hope you all realise that i'll be out for the full 5 hrs, not of this finishing in 3 - 4 hours, I'm going to get value for my money!!;)

    Donedea 50 k - Week 7 Continued!!

    Thursday 5th Jan
    Plan
    6m Easy
    Actual 4m easy

Can't remember why but very late getting out for this one, just as it was getting dark so decided to do a short recovery run and push the 6m easy out to Friday, but it was brighter for longer than i had realised so squeezed 4m out of it. It was pitch dark by the time i was finished but no traffic on my little road so all good. Didn't bother with the last 2m on the treadmill as i had 4 extra miles already run this week. Lovely slow run.

    10.40, 10.09, 9.56, 10.10
    Total 4.12 in 42.03 @ 10.12

    Friday 6th Jan
    Plan
    Rest
    Actual Rest
I was going to try for a running streak for Jan but decided rest is more important and i was tired and had a gang of 14 years olds coming for dinner so lots to do!!

    Saturday 7th January
    Plan
    1m wu, 4 x 10 mins @ 8.50 off 3 mins Rec, 1m cd
    Actual 1m wu, 4 x 10 mins @ 8.50 off 3 mins Rec, 1m cd

Didn't get this done early in the day and was going to do it on the Treadmill but the thoughts of the heat & sweating made me really want to do this outside so headed to Ardee in the evening to do this. Really enjoyed it but need to sort the new watch as the constant beeping when not in the correct zone drove me mad!!!
I didn't realise Ardee was so big that i could do a good few miles without having to run up and down the main street. Would definitely head there more often if required!!!

    9.52, 8.48, 8.46, 8.42, 8.43, 9.37
    Total 7.66 m in 1:11:46 @ 9.22

    Sunday 8th January
    Plan
    15m Easy
    Actual 15m Easy on Monday

My first born turned 14 today so feeling old!!! I ended up not getting out for this on Sunday. i could list a whole load of excuses here but the main problem was sore Calves after a night out in high heels, wore the calf guards all day and then decided to rest them.

Went to a talk on Sunday morning in Navan with the great Gerry Duffy. He is an amazing man and i would listen to him for ever.

Long run Monday - extended lunchtime run.
I did this as 5 laps x 3m circuit here in the Phoenix Park. Psychologically I found this great . The sun was shining but there was an icy nip in the air. Thank God for my new Thermal gloves. I ran from HQ up Chesterfield Ave to Phoenix monument across onto North Road and completed the circuit back to HQ.
There was a mighty strong & cold cross wind on Chesterfield Ave for every lap but the North road was a lovely suntrap.

Loved this run, kept it slow and i felt great. Not a peep from the calves. Took calf guards off to run and put them back on afterwards.

Delighted I didn't force myself out last night in the dark at an unGodly hour!!!

    9.49, 9.40, 9.44, 9.40, 9.40, 9.42, 9.28, 9.39, 9.37, 9.34, 9.37, 9.40, 9.35, 9.38, 9.41
    Total 15.10 in 2:25 @ 9.39

The kickstart to get back to full on healthy eating didn't quite go to plan last week so back at it today. I have a few Christmas lbs to get rid off!!!

    Plan
    12m Progression 5 @ easy, 4 @ steady, 3 @ MP
    Actual 12m Progression 5 @ easy, 4 @ steady, 3 @ MP

Set off for this and decided to do a 5m lap, 4m lap & 3m lap but the wind was so strong in parts of the park that after consulting with a wise Auldman (quick chat with the Auldmanking after he finished his resistance session)I decided to try running outside the wall for a bit of shelter...this backfired as i ended up with a headwind instead of a cross wind.

Ran a bit on the trails and although there was lots of shelter, the ground was very soft, squishy & mucky underfoot and I don't like that , so took to the main routes in the park again. Chesterfield Ave heading down from Castleknock gate was lovely with practically no wind.

Very happy with how the session went despite the wind.

    Thursday 12th Jan.
    Plan
    6m Easy
    Actual 6m easy

Decided to get this out of the way before this bad weather hits:rolleyes: so wrapped up well put the base layer on as i missed it yesterday when the sun wasn't shining and there was no sun shining today so base layer, long sleeved top, full length leggings, hat, gloves & neck buff(back of my neck is always cold, not just running.

Brought the dog as usual but the puppy was not happy to be left behind. ATM its out of his ability and he is still not trained fully on the lead and took my back 2 weeks to recover from his last outing where he pulled too hard on the lead.

Anyway very cold starting off and strong winds again but just kept it easy. Didn't pay any attention to the watch and didn't try make up the times for the uphills.

Sun came out during mile 5 and it helped take the sting out of the air. Then the snow starting falling just as i was coming in the gate, but it was only a short shower and nothing has materialised since, but the sun is still shining. Quads a little tight by the end of this so looking forward to foam rolling later and the rest day tomorrow!!

How old is the pup? The general recommendation is 5 minutes per month of age per day of exercise, otherwise the joints may be damaged, so a 5 month old pup should only get 25 minutes of walks. Running with a dog needs to be monitored more carefully, as they can't slow down if they want to.

When he's old enough (12 months) embrace the pulling, get yourself a canicross belt, bungee line, harness on the dog, and let him do half the work ;)

Oscar, the puppy is only 8mths old and it was 20mins we were out for. I will gradually increase this. The pulling was just because he's not use to being out on the road and he was trying to keep up with the other dog. I will take him on his own as I increase mileage for him!!

Will look into better leads , as hope to eventually bring both of them on the runs with me!!

Wrapped up really well for this as was bitter cold out, but half a mile into it the sun came out and i was roasting. I had to take off the hat & the neck warmer and carry them but glad i did as i might have keeled over with the heat if i didn't.

I was about 2 mins into the first rep when I had to jump into the ditch as a lorry was coming straight at me and didn't move out at all, think he may not have seen me with the low lying sun even thought i had a high viz on. There is no hard shoulder on this part of the road and i was lucky ther was somewhere to go. Rattled me a bit but I tried not to think about it!!
1 -3 were on the out leg and 4 - 6 were on the way back. Rep 4 was the most difficult as i turned for home and into a bit of a head wind. Had to work harder on this one than on the others. I also had the sun in my eyes now and had no sunglasses with me!!!( and me that needs then even on cloudy days, i was squinting like mad)!!!

Cool down mile, temp dropped dramatically and the sun disappeared and it was great to be finished at this stage. Looks like i got out in the best weather of the day...

I always enjoy these sessions as they kept it all interesting. Thankfully body is holding up well and the residual pain in my hips is almost gone!!!

    Actual: Gym: S&C

More of the introductory conditioning regime using the various weight machines in the gym. Warmed up for 10 mins on the elliptical beforehand. My head-rolling treadmill buddy from yesterday was back in action, really giving it socks. Couldn't help noticing he was wearing the same sweaty shirt from yesterday though, and really pouring another day's worth into it. Luckily I was on the other side of the room.

Didn’t read the schedule properly so a bonus 2k. Could have done this slower too.

    Plan: 8-15k tune up race
    Actual: LR 32.2k @ 5:19 (20m @ 8:34) inc. St. Anne’s parkrun (Avg HRR 74%)

First 20 miler since the DCM training. Like the last one, this one began early, hooking up with FBOT at Dollymount. We took in the wooden bridge and the beach, arriving as a long line of cars was exiting the beach car park but too late to see what they'd were up to. Speculation naturally ensued. :)

Rounded up Ferris, yaboya1 and Duanington after an hour to take in a couple of laps of St. Anne’s before finishing with a nice steady parkrun. Excellent run, finishing with breakfast and some top-notch token sorting, so a parkrun volunteer credit too. Good morning’s work all round.

Close one Anne, thankfully you were okay.
I run on roads like that with no hard shoulders as well (no choice where I live) and always concerned for the day I'll have to do that as well I figure. The worst/less considerate drivers in regards pulling out and giving some space are typically van drivers I find. Glad that you escaped okay, did you get cut up with briars or anything like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,903 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Well done on being ready to hop into the ditch. When I run on country roads I'm always wary of drivers who fail to slow down at least a little, to signal that they've seen you at least. So when a car is approaching I often find myself scanning the ditch just in case I have to dive into it! One of the risks we have to endure, I suppose.

I usually don't have any problem and I only go on the main road for the sessions as too much trying to get session on my usual back roads, too many hills , rolling & steep.
I spend my time watching the cars for giving me a bit of room and very seldom have a problem with lorries or vans. The ones i hate are the cars that stick on the indicator but don't move an inch!! You really need your wits about you with some of the drivers. There's not much of the part of the road(N52) i run on that doesn't have a hard shoulder and i was lucky it was a recently cut "good" :D ditch so no problems after!!!
