A garage doesn't send out a new log book to you. They can either do the change of ownership procedure online for a second hand car or send to Shannon by post. It takes Shannon up to 3 weeks (could take longer at this time of year due to new car registrations) to send out a new log book to the new owner.

If the car is a newly registered second hand import then you will not receive the new log book until you first tax the car. If it is a brand new car then you can tax it online a few days after you get the registration number.

Around 5-7 working days you should have it, could be busier now with new car regs. Have a look at the vehicle transaction enquiry section of motortax.ie it will say when the reg cert was issued.

How can I tax the car without having the log book.

I bought a second hand car and I would rather have it all taxed up instead of driving around with no tax.
If I go in to the council office would they tax it for me do you think even though the ownership change still hasnt gone through.

Is there a way that the change of ownership can be done online by the garage in order to speed up the process. - How long would the online process take?

A garage can only do it online if they are setup to do so. But the change online bit takes 5 mins, its the process after that by Shannon that takes longer and out of a garage's hands. Keep checking the motortax website. As soon as ownership changes on the motor tax site you can request a new PIN to tax it and don't have to wait till the logbook arrives.

Not much you can do until you get the log book, I wouldn't worry about it really. It might be good to keep some sort of proof of purchase of the car with you in case you do get stopped.
