I can only assume that Bono hasn't been mentioned as it's just generally accepted that he's shíte.

Ahh féck off, typical Irish hating on others success.

    Shíte me hole.

Was at a funeral for a work colleagues Dad and an aul fella shuffled up, we thought to say a few words.

He began to sing, talk, almost sigh, softly in a gravelly voice but with such clarity and emotion.

You could hear a pin drop. It was hairs on the back of the neck stuff, arms, everything.

When he got to the last line and almost whispered 'the old man' there was not a dry eye in the house.

We found out it was Finbar Furey, a friend of the family.

While he may not be the best singer in the world technically ; to have a voice that conveys to people a wealth of emotion, knowledge , life experiences, and touches them personally is a rare rare gift.

I'd take this any day over like some of those X factor people who could sing the phone book note perfect but with about as much meaning.

No hating Father but if Bono ain't an overrated singer then I don't know who is.

Lead singer of U2, one of the best selling music artists of all time constantly selling out stadiums around the world says different.

Which doesn't mean to say he isn't an overrated singer.

Probably technically overrated as they are one of the biggest bands in the world over 30+ years. His voice may not be fantastic but U2 are.
The problem I have with his voice is when he is speaking not singing.

I never said he was or wasn't over rated. I have never read anywhere to believe he was the best singer of all time thus him being 'over rated', he's an equal member in a band that are arguably one of the best bands of all time.

You said he was shyte which is simply not true.

Not a fan of her rockabilly stuff but this performance was stunning. She has a great voice.

Saw Imelda May singing with Robert Plant at the London blues fest. Both were brilliant doing blues numbers

Also , luke Kelly , a couple of nice renditions but absolutely brutalised a lot of songs , never got the appeal , barney mckenna was a much better all rounder imo but never seems to get the praise the rest of the beardie brigade get

Ah Luke "did I tell you about the time I met him" Kelly, not a real singer at all, He was more a pub singer and heavy drinker who was just as happy outside the pub in a brawl as he was in at the bar rattlin off some ballads over a rake of pints. Every Dub knew him personally just as they all knew bang bang and the other wasters of the city!

My number 1 has to be Glen Handbag Hansard for male and Enya for the female.

I see no-one has mentioned Van Morrison - rubbish.
John McCormack - hype. Nowadays he wouldn't get through to the second round of the X Factor.
    Phil Lynott - totally mediocre.

I'll give you the count but Van Morrison has some of the best albums ever under his belt and is still producing music that is better that most.
Phil Lynott with Thin Lizzy produced some of the greatest rock to ever come out of Ireland.

Sorry, I should have included an eye roll smiley or something of the sort. The point being that virtually all of our best musicians are rubbish according to this thread.

    Overrated
Enya who can't sing live for buttons

One of the best and underrated was Brian Kennedy .

    Wha?????:confused::eek::eek:

Are you actually being serious right now?

Go and listen to Stephen Ryan if you want genius. Scott Miller Said, from the Revenants second album in particular. There's someone who can really sing and write superb songs. Really irks me to see the likes of Damien Dempsey and Glen Hansard get such recognition when they haven't a fraction of this mans talent.

I nearly forgot about Derek Ryan the 2nd rate Nathan Carter clone! Yet another "Irish" singer who is not really from Ireland!

Ronnie Drew - Never got the appeal, that gravel voiced thing is grating.
Luke Kelly - an assault on the ear drums.
    Finbar Furey - see above.
Christy Moore - never got it, the tunes are terrible and the voice is just as bad. The one or two decent tunes he had were written by others.
Shane McGowan - Can never work out what he is singing or saying, it just sounds like inaudible mutters to me.

One of the best and underrated was Brian Kennedy .

To be fair to Enya, the technical requirements for her music precluded her for performing live for years as there just wasn't the ability to recreate the sound she wanted outside of the studio.

As for Brian Kennedy, he would have to be rated first to be underrated. The man is shockingly bad.

    Sharon Corr.

    Ronan Keating.

Both guilty of doing bland cover versions of classic songs by superior artists.
